Delay

Before play, know the exact control that applies: base time, increment or delay, any additional period, and any platform- or event-specific procedure that affects the clock. Do not generalize rules from another tournament or website.
Increment Changes the Value of a Reserve
With increment, a small reserve can often be rebuilt during simple sequences, but only if you continue making competent moves. Increment is not “extra free time” that justifies spending the base clock carelessly. It changes the recovery dynamics of the clock.
Delay behaves differently: depending on the implementation, part of the thinking interval may not reduce the displayed main time, but unused delay normally does not accumulate like increment. The practical lesson is simple: understand the mechanism rather than memorizing a slogan.
Use Opponent Time Without Autoplaying
The opponent's clock is useful for broad work: identify likely replies, compare plans, notice loose pieces, recall theoretical ideas and prepare candidate families. But commit to a move only after seeing what was actually played. A small change in move order can alter tactics, legal recaptures or the evaluation of a planned response.
A good reset question is: What changed relative to the position I was analyzing on their time? If the answer is “nothing relevant,” you have saved time. If something did change, you have avoided an expensive autopilot error.
