Tactical Defense: Counterattacks, Desperadoes & Saving Resources

Learn to defend tactically instead of reacting passively: capture attackers, counterattack with tempo, use intermediate moves, simplify, return material, seek perpetual check, repetition or stalemate, and reduce losses when the position cannot be fully saved.

Tactics is not only how winning positions are won.

It is also how losing positions are saved.

A complete tactical scan must ask:

What forcing resource does the defender have?

Tactical Defense Is Active

Tactical defense often works by creating a problem for the attacker rather than merely adding another defender.

Resources include:

  • capture attacker;
  • counterattack;
  • countercheck;
  • intermediate move;
  • simplify;
  • return material;
  • force perpetual/repetition;
  • create stalemate;
  • sacrifice defensively.

Defense can force.

Capture the Attacker

The simplest tactical defense:

  • remove the attacking piece.

Before assuming it works, verify:

  • capture legal?;
  • recapture?;
  • another attacker remains?;
  • checking line reopens?;
  • defender becomes overloaded?

Counterattack with Tempo

Instead of answering threat passively, attack:

  • queen;
  • king;
  • mating target;
  • promotion square

with sufficient urgency.

A stronger counter-threat can force the attacker to respond.

Warning

You cannot ignore:

  • check;
  • immediate legal game-ending threat

unless your move legally resolves it.

Counter-Check

When in check, a legal response may itself check the opponent.

This can:

  • seize initiative;
  • force king movement;
  • gain time for escape;
  • simplify.

The counter-check must still remove the original check.

Intermediate Defensive Move

The defender can use a zwischenzug before the expected recapture or loss.

Examples:

  • check first;
  • capture higher-value attacker;
  • create mate threat;
  • save target with tempo.

This mirrors offensive move-order tactics.

Defend the Tactical Target

Sometimes the direct answer is best:

  • add defender;
  • move target;

Return / Give Material

If material was previously won, returning some can:

  • neutralize attack;
  • free trapped piece;
  • avoid mate;
  • enter drawable ending.

Desperado

A desperado is a piece that is doomed/trapped or effectively lost but extracts maximum value before disappearing.

Possible actions:

  • capture something;
  • give check;
  • force concession;
  • alter recapture order.

Distinguish:

  • sacrifice → voluntarily invest material for purpose;
  • zwischenzug → intermediate move before expected continuation;
  • desperado → value extraction from a piece expected to be lost.

One move can be all three in different descriptive senses.

Perpetual Check

A perpetual check is a practical tactical mechanism in which one side can keep checking so the opponent cannot escape the checking cycle without unacceptable consequence.

Rules safeguard:

Perpetual check is not a separate FIDE draw category.

The game may actually end through:

  • threefold repetition claim;
  • fivefold repetition automatically;
  • agreement;
  • another applicable draw rule.

Force Repetition

The defender may deliberately force the same legal position to recur.

Tactical mechanism:

  • checks;
  • threats;
  • forced king route;
  • repeated attack on queen/piece.

Rules result depends on:

  • claim-based threefold;
  • automatic fivefold;
  • exact position identity.

Stalemate Combination

A side can tactically force stalemate by removing its own legal moves.

Methods:

  • sacrifice remaining material;
  • force king into non-check no-move position;
  • block own pawn moves;
  • induce opponent capture.

Tactical Fortress Preview

A defender may sacrifice/transform into a fortress-like structure that the opponent cannot penetrate or win against under correct play.

  • the game still ends through an actual rules mechanism such as agreement, repetition, 50/75-move rule, or eventually dead position where applicable.

Defensive Sacrifice

  • remove attacker;
  • block line;
  • create perpetual;
  • create stalemate;
  • enter holdable ending;
  • destroy opponent promotion.

The tactical objective is survival, not attack.

Defending Against Forks

Possible resources:

  • move one target with tempo while protecting other;
  • capture forking piece;
  • countercheck/counterattack;
  • move both targets through one move if geometry allows (e.g. king move protects piece);
  • create stronger threat.

Warning A fork is not automatically winning material.

Defending Against Pins

Resources:

  • move king/rear target;
  • attack pinning piece;
  • block line;
  • capture pinning piece;
  • move pinned piece along line if legal;
  • counterattack.

For absolute pins:

  • never propose an illegal move exposing own king.

Defending Against Discovered Attacks

Resources can target:

  • rear slider;
  • front moving piece;
  • revealed target;
  • line itself.

Common ideas:

  • move target before discovery;
  • remove battery;
  • add blocker;
  • create counter-threat;
  • exchange rear slider.

perpetual check = automatic draw immediately.

Desperado optimization

For a doomed piece, compare candidate desperado moves by:

  • material captured;
  • checks generated;
  • defender removed;
  • pawn structure changed;
  • whether move improves eventual recapture sequence.

A flashy check that gains nothing may be inferior to a quiet high-value capture before the piece dies.

Defensive forcing-move scan

When under attack, scan in this order only as a resource checklist, not a rigid algorithm:

  1. legal responses to current check if in check;
  2. counterchecks;
  3. captures of attackers;
  4. forcing counterattacks;
  5. simplifications;
  6. material return;
  7. draw resources;
  8. quiet defensive moves.

The purpose is to prevent passive tunnel vision.

Defending a double attack by one multipurpose move

A double attack succeeds when the threats cannot be answered together.

Defensive motifs include:

  • queen moves with check while protecting rook;
  • king moves out of check and attacks forking knight;
  • one exchange removes attacker and protects second target;

This result ladder prevents a common defensive error: refusing to return material because the original position was better.

The defender gets forcing moves too

Before accepting the opponent's threat as decisive, perform your own forcing scan:

  • checks;
  • captures of the attacker or key defender;
  • counterattacks on the queen;
  • intermediate moves;
  • promotions;
  • tactical simplifications;
  • perpetual-check routes;
  • stalemate mechanisms.

The best defense often changes the problem rather than directly answering it.

One move can solve two threats

A double attack is not automatically decisive because the defender may have a multipurpose move. Examples:

  • move one attacked piece with check while defending the other;
  • trade the attacking piece;
  • create a stronger mate threat;
  • pin the attacker;
  • force a queen exchange.

This is why tactical claims must be tested against active defense.

Desperadoes and loss minimization

A doomed piece should not always retreat. If it cannot survive, ask how much value it can extract first. A desperado may capture material, destroy a pawn structure, force the king into danger or secure a draw before being lost.

The correct comparison is not “can I save this piece?” but which continuation produces the best final result?
