Chess Composition Explained: Stipulations, Problems, Studies & Notation

Learn how chess composition works: stipulations, directmates, helpmates, selfmates, studies, specialist notation, diagrams, solutions and the conventions that distinguish composed chess from practical puzzles.

Chess composition is an independent artistic and technical use of chess material. A composition normally presents a diagram, an explicit stipulation, and an author's solution; its content can also include set play, tries, virtual play, formal relationships and thematic structure.

The first reading order is:

rules/conventions → stipulation → diagram → solution structure → themes → artistic evaluation

Key idea

Do not begin by asking “what is the best move?” Begin by asking “what exactly is the stipulated task?”

What Chess Composition Is

Chess composition uses chess-derived rules and material to create a deliberately authored task, usually a diagram plus stipulation and solution, whose value can include formal, thematic, paradoxical and artistic effects beyond practical play.

Practical Puzzle vs Composition

A practical puzzle is primarily an instructional chess position asking for a best move or plan. A composition is deliberately constructed around a stipulation and is judged for technical soundness and artistic/thematic construction as well as chess correctness.

Problem vs Study

In standard composition usage, studies are win/draw compositions without a specified move maximum; compositions in other established stipulation families are usually called problems. General chess media often uses problem more loosely, so the specialist sense should be signposted.

Composer vs Solver

The composer authors the construction and intended solution; the solver reconstructs that solution from the published task. A strong composition creates a fair but nontrivial relationship between the two roles.

Stipulation

The stipulation states the exact objective and move convention: for example #2, h#2, s#3, White to move and win, a proof game length, or a fairy objective. It is part of the rules, not a caption.

Orthodox / Heterodox / Fairy / Exo

Use these as composition classifications, not casual difficulty labels. Orthodox applies ordinary chess rules/objectives; heterodox changes the objective/interaction while often retaining orthodox pieces; fairy/exo may modify pieces, conditions, board or deeper rules. Exact taxonomy can vary, so source the convention used.

Composition Rule Provenance

Record the applicable WFCC Codex/convention and any fairy rules. Do not silently substitute the newest tournament Laws for the composition's own published convention, especially in historical or retro content.

Codex of Chess Compositions

The WFCC Codex of Chess Compositions is the main current institutional reference for composition categories, soundness, publication, priority and conventions. The WFCC page currently identifies the Codex as the Vilnius 2019 version.

Directmate

In a directmate, White moves first and forces mate of the black king in the stipulated maximum number of White moves against Black's best resistance.

Helpmate

In a helpmate, Black normally moves first and cooperates with White so that Black is mated in the stipulated number of moves. Multiple explicitly indicated solutions and twins are common artistic devices rather than automatic defects.

Selfmate

In a selfmate, White moves first and forces a resisting Black to deliver mate to White within the stipulated number of moves. Black tries to avoid fulfilling White's objective.

Win Study

A win study stipulates White to move and force a win, normally without a specified move maximum. Soundness requires that the intended artistic route survive best defense under the applicable conventions.

Draw Study

A draw study stipulates White to move and force a draw, often through paradoxical resources such as stalemate, perpetual mechanisms, fortress geometry, mutual zugzwang or tactical liquidation.

Stalemate Stipulations

A stalemate stipulation makes stalemate—not mate—the formal objective. The task must state which side is to be stalemated, who moves first and the move limit or cooperative/adversarial relationship; ordinary assumptions about checkmate are irrelevant once the stipulation defines a different endpoint.

Series Stipulations

In a series stipulation, one side makes several consecutive moves before the other side receives its prescribed move or sequence. Because normal alternation is suspended, the rules must state who makes the series, whether checks are allowed during intermediate moves, and what final objective ends the series.

Other Objectives

Composition can stipulate objectives beyond direct mate, helpmate, selfmate and win/draw studies: stalemate, proof games, retractors, series play and fairy goals are established examples. The objective belongs to the published rules of the task and must be defined before any move is evaluated.

#2 / #3 / Moremover

#2 means directmate in two White moves; #3 directmate in three; a moremover is a directmate in more than three. These are genre labels with different construction/solving traditions, not merely ratings of difficulty.

h# / s#

h#n denotes a helpmate of the stated length; s#n a selfmate. Half-move forms and who begins must be read from specialist notation/publication convention and defined for general readers.

Study Symbols

Publication styles often use + for a study to win and = for a study to draw, but general readers should receive the wording at first use. Symbols supplement rather than replace the stipulation.

Define Shorthand Before Use

Specialist shorthand is efficient only after its semantics are known. On first use, write the task in plain language and then give the symbol—for example #2 for directmate in two, h#2 for helpmate in two or s#3 for selfmate in three—so the reader never has to infer cooperation, resistance or move counting from typography alone.

Diagram

The diagram is the starting position of the composition under the stated rules and side-to-move convention. In retro/fairy work it may not be adequately represented by ordinary FEN alone.

Solution

The author's solution is the move sequence or set of sequences fulfilling the stipulation. A complete publication may also show set play, tries, refutations, thematic variations and explanatory notes.

Composition Metadata

Core metadata should include composer(s), first publication/source, date, distinction/award, stipulation, twins/solutions, fairy elements, solution, themes, verification status, anticipation/predecessor information and rights/license.

Foundation Practice

Practice stipulation reading before solving: classify directmate, helpmate, selfmate, study, retro and fairy tasks; state who moves first and who cooperates; interpret move counts; and identify which rule assumptions differ from ordinary chess. The exercise is passed only when the solver can restate the task accurately without calculating a move.

Read the Stipulation Before You Read the Position

A composed position is not self-explanatory. The same diagram can define completely different tasks depending on who moves first, whether the sides cooperate or resist, the required endpoint and the move count. Before calculating, translate the stipulation into a sentence such as: “White moves first and forces mate on White's second move against every legal defense.” That one sentence determines what counts as a solution.

This is the first major difference from ordinary tactical puzzles. In practical chess, the game objective and move alternation are assumed. In composition, the task itself is part of the object being studied.

Four Layers of a Composition

It helps to separate four layers:

  1. Rule layer — orthodox rules, Codex conventions and any declared fairy conditions.
  2. Task layer — stipulation, side to move, move count, solutions and twins.
  3. Solution layer — key, threats, defenses, variations, set play, tries or retro logic.
  4. Artistic layer — themes, paradox, economy, unity, difficulty and originality.

Confusing these layers causes predictable errors. A beautiful idea cannot repair an unsound solution; a legal solution is not automatically artistically strong; and a correct practical move can be irrelevant if it does not fulfil the stipulated task.

Composition Notation Is Compressed Rules

Symbols such as #2, h#2, s#3, + and = are useful because specialists can read them quickly, but they compress assumptions about cooperation, resistance and move counting. When learning—or publishing for a broad audience—always give the plain-language meaning at first use. A notation system is successful only when it removes ambiguity rather than creating it.
