How to Use the 58 Patterns
Do not memorize the label attached to each pair. For every pattern, identify four things: what changed, why the practical decision changes, which chess-quality constraint remains fixed, and what counterexample would reverse the conclusion.
A useful training method is to hide the pattern title and compare the two positions or contexts cold. State your decision first, then reveal the intended contrast. If your answer differs, determine whether the mistake was evaluation, time allocation, candidate generation, risk preference or execution.
Build Personal Pattern Pairs
The most useful additions to this library come from your own games. Pair two moments with a similar surface feature but different correct decisions—for example, one queen trade that safely converts an advantage and another that throws away the initiative. Write the distinguishing condition in one sentence. Over time, the collection becomes a practical decision library built around differences that matter, not generic rules.
