Stalemate as Endgame Resource

False Fortresses

Drawing Mechanism vs Legal Draw Rule
Perpetual check and fortress are chess mechanisms, not separate legal results. A game actually ends through checkmate, stalemate, agreement, repetition, the move-count rules or another applicable rule. This distinction matters when teaching: “perpetual” usually means the checking side can force repetition or prevent escape, not that the laws contain an independent perpetual-check article.
Under current FIDE Laws, a correct player claim can draw after 50 moves by each side without a pawn move or capture, while fivefold repetition and 75 such moves trigger automatic draws, with checkmate on the final move taking precedence over the 75-move rule.
Defending by Changing the Winning Method
A good defensive resource often does not hold the current position forever. Instead it forces the attacker to abandon the easy plan and enter a harder theoretical ending, an opposite-colored bishop ending, a checking ending or a position with stalemate tricks. Practical defense aims to reduce the opponent's margin for error while preserving objective drawing mechanisms.
