How to Analyze and Verify a Defensive Position

Use a Defensive Position Card to diagnose threats, compare active and passive resources, test material return and simplification, verify the best defense and identify the moment when defense should become counterplay.

A defensive position is easiest to understand when you separate diagnosis, intervention and the position after stabilization. The Defensive Position Card below provides a reusable structure for game analysis, training and publication-quality examples.

It is not a formula that chooses the move for you. Its purpose is to prevent the most common analytical omission: finding a move that stops one visible threat without checking what happens next.

The Defensive Position Card

1. Root Position

Record:

  • side to move;
  • material balance;
  • king safety;
  • relevant pawn structure;
  • active and passive pieces;
  • tactical features that constrain candidate moves.

If you are studying a concrete position, save the FEN so the analysis can be reproduced.

2. Threat Diagnosis

Write down:

  • immediate forcing threat;
  • broader attacking potential;
  • real target;
  • critical attacker;
  • critical access line or entry square;
  • opening pawn break;
  • likely reinforcing move.

If you cannot state what the opponent is threatening, do not choose a defensive move yet.

3. Attack Preconditions

Ask which conditions make the attack work:

  • vulnerable target;
  • local superiority;
  • open access;
  • time or initiative;
  • weak king shelter;
  • overloaded or missing defender.

The best defense often removes one of these conditions rather than answering every threat separately.

4. Defensive Candidate Set

Generate candidates from several families:

  • active defense or counter-check;
  • capture or exchange of the critical attacker;
  • passive reinforcement;
  • prophylaxis;
  • king move or flight-square creation;
  • line closure or interposition;
  • structural break;
  • material return;
  • simplification;
  • counterplay elsewhere.

You do not need one move from every family. The list exists to stop tunnel vision.

5. Minimum Necessary Defense

State exactly what must remain protected and which resources can stay active. This step prevents overdefense. If one move solves the threat completely, additional passive reinforcement may be a waste of time.

6. Best Defense and Best Reply

For the leading candidate, record:

  • move;
  • defensive purpose;
  • opponent's strongest continuation;
  • your answer;
  • resulting position or FEN.

A defensive move is not verified until it survives the opponent's most dangerous reply, not merely the move you expect in practice.

7. Stabilized Position

Reassess:

  • is the attack still forcing?
  • can the attacker reopen lines immediately?
  • is the king actually safer?
  • what material and structural concessions were made?
  • which defensive pieces are now active?
  • where can counterplay begin?
  • is an endgame transition available?

8. Transition Decision

Choose the next phase:

  • continue emergency defense;
  • improve the worst defender;
  • simplify;
  • create counterplay;
  • counterattack;
  • seize the initiative.

The card is incomplete if it ends with "the attack is stopped." Defense should explain what the defender can do after the danger is contained.

Example Type: Threat Diagnosis

Choose a legal position with dangerous-looking pressure but only one concrete threat. Hide the theme. Before calculating, identify the real target and the attacker's next reinforcing move. Compare a passive defense with an active resource and explain why one is more efficient.

Example Type: Flight Square

Compare two positions where the same pawn move creates luft. In one, the flight square breaks a mating net; in the other, the pawn move creates a decisive hook or opens a diagonal. The exercise teaches that "make luft" is conditional.

Example Type: Exchange the Attacker

Use a position where one attacking piece performs a unique function. Then alter the position so another attacker can replace it. The same exchange should be correct in one case and insufficient in the other.

Example Type: Queen Trade

Compare a queen exchange that neutralizes all attacking chances with one that enters a lost endgame. Evaluate the destination rather than awarding the trade automatically.

Example Type: Defensive Recapture

Use a capture where two recaptures are legal but create different files, diagonals or pawn structures. The correct defense should depend on the geometry after the recapture.

Example Type: Central Counterplay

Start from a wing attack whose success depends on a stable center. Test whether a central break interrupts the attack quickly enough and whether it exposes the attacker's king or your own.

Example Type: Redeployment

Ask whether a distant defender can arrive in time without abandoning another duty. Count usable tempi and transit squares rather than geometric distance.

Example Type: Material Return

Begin from a material-plus position under heavy pressure. Compare clinging to the extra material with returning part of it to close lines, exchange queens or finish development.

Example Type: Simplification

Compare two apparently similar exchanges. One reaches a holdable ending; the other removes the defender's only source of activity. Explain the structural difference.

Example Type: Fortress or Blockade

Identify the defensive mechanism and then search actively for the opponent's breaking methods: second front, zugzwang, sacrifice, king entry or structural transformation. Avoid declaring a draw from appearance alone.

Example Type: Perpetual or Repetition

Map the forcing loop position by position. Verify escape squares, interpositions, captures and queen trades. If the result relies on repetition, distinguish the practical checking mechanism from the actual rule that produces the draw.

Example Type: Stalemate

List every legal move in the final position. A stalemate claim is valid only when the side to move is not in check and has no legal move at all.

Example Type: Inferior-Position Resistance

Ask what absolutely must be saved, which weakness can be conceded, which opponent piece should be exchanged and what active resource makes conversion harder.

Example Type: Transition to Counterplay

Study a short sequence with five phases:

  1. attack active;
  2. defensive intervention;
  3. stabilization;
  4. first active move;
  5. counterplay or initiative shift.

The key question is where the defender should stop thinking defensively.

Human Analysis Before Engine Verification

Analyze the defensive mechanism first without an engine. Write the threat, candidate defenses and expected resulting position. Then use an engine to test tactical soundness, missed resources and move-order details.

Engine evaluation does not replace explanation. A useful analysis should still identify why the defensive resource works and which attacking prerequisite it removes.

Endgame and Tablebase Verification

If liquidation reaches theoretical or tablebase territory, separate the strategic decision to enter the ending from the exact technical truth of the resulting position. Tablebases can verify the latter; they do not explain whether the transition was the best practical defensive choice from the original position.

Historical Examples and Source Discipline

When using a historical game, verify players, event, date, PGN and move number. Attribute published analysis where appropriate. Do not invent a player's private fear, intention or thought process merely to make the story more vivid.

Verification Checklist

Before considering a defensive example complete, confirm:

  • root position is legal and reproducible;
  • real threat is stated precisely;
  • immediate threat is separated from general pressure;
  • critical attacker, line, break or reinforcing move is identified when relevant;
  • at least one active resource is considered;
  • queen trades and simplifications are evaluated by the resulting position;
  • material return is considered when it changes the defensive mechanism;
  • perpetual, repetition, stalemate and fortress claims use precise terminology;
  • resulting position is verified;
  • the transition after stabilization is explained.

Key takeaway: a defensive example should show not only how danger disappears, but how the defender's position becomes playable again.
