A canonical Carlsbad structure commonly has White pawns a2 b2 c2 d4 against Black a7 b7 c6 d5 (with corresponding e-pawns exchanged), creating White's queenside 2-vs-3 minority and characteristic central asymmetry. Exact peripheral pawns can vary.
Openings Producing Carlsbad
It is famous from QGD Exchange but can arise from other queen-pawn/Caro-Kann-related move orders. Structure identity is more important than opening name.
Minority Attack
White often advances b4-b5 against Black's a/b/c majority to induce a target—commonly c6 or a backward pawn after exchanges. This is canonical, not mandatory.
Creating c6/c3-Type Targets
After minority exchanges, the majority side may be left with a backward/isolated c-pawn. In reversed structures the analogous target can appear on c3. Target creation is the purpose—not merely pushing b-pawn because the structure has a name.

After cxd5 cxd5, a symmetrical central skeleton can arise. Symmetry does not mean equality of plans because:

The paradox of attacking with fewer pawns
Normally, a pawn majority has long-term potential because it can create a passer.
The minority attack turns that strength into a target by forcing the majority to clarify.

- fixing queenside weaknesses;
- creating an entry square for a knight or rook.
The defending side is not passive
The side with the majority often has active counterplans:
