Knowing how a chessman moves is only the beginning.
Chess becomes a game of interaction when the movement rules are applied to occupied squares:
- a friendly chessman can block;
- an enemy chessman can become a capture target;
- a chessman can attack another chessman without actually capturing it;
- a chessman can also attack or control an empty square.
These relationships are the foundation of almost every later chess idea.
Occupancy, blocking, and contact
Every chess position is shaped by occupancy: which squares are empty and which are occupied.
For a basic movement decision, a square can be:
- empty;
- occupied by a friendly chessman;
- occupied by an opposing chessman.
Those three states affect movement differently.
Friendly occupancy
A chessman cannot normally move onto a square occupied by another chessman of the same color.
A friendly chessman can therefore act as a blocker.
For a sliding piece such as a rook, bishop, or queen:
- the friendly occupied square cannot be entered;
- every square beyond it on that ray is also inaccessible from the current position.
For a knight:
- friendly chessmen on intervening squares do not matter;
- but a friendly chessman on the destination square still prevents the knight from moving there.
Enemy occupancy
An opposing chessman can be different.
If the movement and capture rules permit it, a chessman may move onto a square occupied by an enemy chessman and capture it.
The enemy chessman is then removed from the board.
For sliding pieces, that enemy chessman still stops the ray:
- the capturing piece may move onto its square;
- it may not pass through it during the same move.
Contact
Two opposing chessmen are in contact when their current placement creates an immediate local relationship, such as:
- one can capture the other;
- they block one another;
- a pawn directly faces another chessman;
- they contest nearby squares.
Contact is useful descriptive language, but it is not a formal replacement for more precise terms such as:
- attacked;
- defended;
- blocked;
- capturable.
Use the precise term whenever the relationship matters; “attack”, “capture”, and “control” describe related but different ideas.
Blocked does not mean attacked
These ideas should not be confused.
Suppose a White pawn is directly in front of a Black pawn.
They block one another's normal forward movement.
But pawns do not capture straight forward.
Therefore:
- the White pawn can block the Black pawn;
- the Black pawn can block the White pawn;
- neither pawn necessarily attacks the other simply because they face each other.
Occupancy tells us what is physically on a square. Movement tells us how a chessman may travel. Capture geometry tells us which enemy-occupied squares it may take.
Those ideas combine to create attack and defense relationships.
How captures work
A capture is a move in which a chessman moves to a square occupied by an opposing chessman and the opposing chessman is removed from the board as part of that move.
The capturing chessman finishes the move on the captured chessman's square.
Capture is part of the move
A capture is not:
- remove the enemy chessman;
- make a separate move.
It is one move.
The capturing chessman moves to the destination square as the opponent's chessman is removed.
This matters because the final position after the capture depends on where the capturing chessman now stands.
That new placement can immediately change:
- which lines are open;
- which chessmen are attacked;
- which squares are defended;
- which pieces block one another.
Even a simple capture transforms more than the material count.
Ordinary capture geometry
For the rook, bishop, queen, knight, and king, ordinary capture geometry follows the same basic movement geometry already learned.
Rook
Captures along an unobstructed rank or file.
Bishop
Captures along an unobstructed diagonal.
Queen
Captures along an unobstructed rank, file, or diagonal.
Knight
Captures on one of its knight-move destination squares and may jump over intervening chessmen.
King
Captures on an adjacent square, but only if the complete king-safety rules make the move legal.
That last condition depends on the full legality rules, especially king safety.
Do not decide a king capture from geometry alone.
An enemy chessman can be adjacent to the king and still be impossible for the king to capture because the destination square is attacked.
Pawn capture is different
The pawn remains the major exception.
A pawn:
- moves straight forward into empty squares;
- captures one square diagonally forward.
Therefore a pawn can attack an enemy chessman diagonally even though it could not make a non-capturing move to that same square under ordinary pawn movement.
Capturing does not mean jumping through
A rook, bishop, or queen that captures an enemy blocker finishes on that blocker's square.
It does not continue through the captured chessman to another square.
A single ordinary move captures at most the chessman occupying the destination square.
"The queen takes both pieces on the same line."
No. If two enemy chessmen stand on the same queen ray, the nearer one blocks the farther one. The queen may capture the nearer one, but the move ends there.
Capturing is optional unless a rule says otherwise
In orthodox chess, a player is not generally required to capture merely because a capture exists.
A player may choose another legal move.
This is important because an available capture can be:
- useful;
- harmless;
- bad;
- a trap.
The existence of a capture tells us that an action is possible, not that it is best.
Possible capture ≠ good capture.
Later sections introduce material values and elementary exchange reasoning. Full tactical calculation comes much later.
Legal geometric captures
Create six mini-positions:
- rook with one clear enemy target;
- rook with a blocker before the target;
- bishop with enemy target on same diagonal;
- knight surrounded by blockers but with enemy destination;
- White pawn with enemy directly ahead and enemy diagonally ahead;
- king adjacent to enemy piece, marked explicitly as geometry only.
Task: Identify which opposing chessmen can be captured according to movement/occupancy geometry.
For the king example, state:
Full legal safety is intentionally not evaluated yet.
Learning goal: Separate capture geometry from strategic value and complete king legality.
Attacking a chessman
A chessman attacks an opposing chessman when, according to the relevant movement/capture geometry, it could make a capture on that chessman's square.
Attack describes a relationship in the current position.
Capture describes an action.
This distinction is fundamental.
Attack is a relationship; capture is an action.
A rook may attack a bishop for several moves without ever capturing it.
A knight may attack two enemy chessmen simultaneously, even if the player can capture only one on the next move.
A queen can attack an enemy pawn even when capturing that pawn would be strategically disastrous.
An attacked piece is not automatically lost
Being attacked means:
an opposing chessman currently has capture geometry toward this square.
It does not automatically mean:
- the piece must move;
- the piece will be captured;
- the capture is profitable;
- the attacker is safe;
- there is no defense;
- the piece is "hanging."
The attacked side may be able to:
- move the piece;
- defend it;
- capture the attacker;
- block the line;
- ignore the attack because the capture is unfavorable;
- create a stronger threat.
The elementary response families are introduced later in this area.
Attack depends on the current position
The same rook may attack a chessman in one position and not attack it after a blocker appears.
The same bishop may attack through an open diagonal and lose that attack when one chessman steps onto the line.
The same knight attack can disappear if either chessman moves.
Attack relationships therefore change from move to move.
Attacking does not imply a good capture
Suppose a White bishop attacks a Black rook.
That sounds favorable because a rook is usually worth more material than a bishop.
But before assuming the capture is good, we may need to know:
- is the bishop pinned?
- is the rook defended?
- what can recapture?
- what happens after the exchange?
- does the capture expose the king?
- is there a stronger move?
Those questions require tactical and calculation skills beyond this introductory guide.
For now, the beginner should learn the correct sequence:
- notice the attack;
- identify what can be captured;
- do not assume the capture is automatically best.
"If I can take it, I should take it."
Chess is not a game of collecting every available enemy chessman. Captures must be evaluated.
Attacking and controlling squares
Chessmen can attack squares, not only occupied enemy chessmen.
A square can be empty and still matter because a chessman could capture an opposing chessman if that opposing chessman occupied the square under the relevant attack definition.
This is often described as attacking or controlling the square.
Empty controlled squares
Place a knight on d4 on an otherwise empty board.
The knight does not currently attack any enemy chessman because there are no enemy chessmen.
But it still attacks its eight geometric destination squares.
Those squares form part of the knight's control.
Slider control and blockers
A rook controls squares along its rank and file only until the relevant blocker relationship stops the ray.
A bishop does the same along diagonals.
A queen combines both.
This means one move that opens or closes a line can change the set of controlled squares immediately.
Attack can exist even when the move itself is illegal
There is one important formal rule worth previewing.
Under FIDE's definition, a chessman can still be considered to attack a square even if moving that chessman there would be illegal because doing so would expose or leave its own king under attack.
That sounds surprising at first.
Example concept:
- a pinned piece may be unable to legally move;
- yet the square it would capture on can still count as attacked for purposes such as king movement.

Attack and legal move are not identical concepts.
Do not use:
"this piece cannot legally move there"
as automatic proof that:
"this piece does not attack the square."
Why controlled squares matter
Controlled squares influence almost everything in chess.
They can affect:
- where a king may move;
- where another chessman can safely move;
- whether a piece can enter a square;
- whether a line is dangerous;
- whether an enemy chessman is defended;
- whether a tactical sequence works;
- whether a pawn can advance safely;
- whether a mating net exists.
At this stage, the goal is simply to recognize the idea accurately.
Later guides turn controlled squares into:
- attack maps;
- mobility;
- outposts;
- king zones;
- color complexes;
- tactical geometry;
- strategic restriction.
A square can be controlled by several chessmen
More than one chessman can attack the same square.
For example:
- a bishop and queen may both attack one diagonal square;
- two knights may both attack the same central square;
- two pawns may protect the same square.
This creates the foundation for the next concepts:
- defenders;
- multiple defenders;
- attackers and defenders;
- contested squares.
Piece or square?
For each statement, classify it as primarily describing:
- an attack on a chessman;
- control/attack of an empty square;
- a capture.
Examples:
- A rook could take the bishop on e4.
- A knight attacks f5, but f5 is empty.
- White moves the bishop onto c6 and removes the Black knight.
- A pawn attacks an empty diagonal square.
- A queen has line-of-sight to an enemy rook with no blocker.

Attacks and controlled squares FAQ
Is attacking a piece the same as capturing it?
No. An attack is a relationship that exists in the current position. A capture is the move that actually removes an enemy piece from the board.
Can a piece control an empty square?
Yes. A square does not need to contain an enemy piece to be attacked or controlled. Empty-square control is central to king safety, mobility, tactics, and strategy.
Can more than one piece control the same square?
Yes. Several pieces from one side—or from both sides—can attack the same square at the same time.
Does being able to capture something mean the capture is good?
No. The capturing piece may be recaptured, diverted from a more important job, or exposed to a stronger threat. First identify the capture; then evaluate the consequences.
