An attacking sacrifice is an investment of material to obtain concrete attacking compensation. related material owns the tactical mechanism; this attacking framework asks whether the whole attacking operation works.
Purposes include:
- exposing the king;
- removing a defender;
- opening a line;
- attracting the king;
- destroying shelter;
- gaining tempi;
- preventing castling;
- creating a mating net;
- securing a perpetual fallback.
The Attacking-Sacrifice Test
Before investing material, state five things explicitly:
- investment — exactly what material is given?
- mechanism — what changes: line, defender, shelter, king location, tempo or mating net?
- acceptance branch — what happens if the opponent takes?
- refusal branch — what happens if the opponent declines or returns material differently?
- fallback — if mate does not exist, what compensation remains?
If you cannot answer these, pattern recognition has produced a candidate, not a conclusion.
Acceptance Is Not Mandatory
Many unsound sacrifices look convincing only because analysis assumes the defender captures. Always calculate serious refusal moves: queen trade, countercheck, closing the line, returning a different piece, king retreat or simply declining the material. The best defense often changes the character of the position instead of accepting the attacker's story.
Greek-Gift Geometry Without Dogma
The classical bishop sacrifice on h7/h2 can work when the king's capture leads to coordinated queen/knight entry and restricted escape squares. But the familiar shape is not enough. Check whether the king can decline, whether the knight has a useful entry, whether the queen can join, whether defenders can cover the critical squares and whether the attack still works after the strongest retreat.
Exchange Sacrifices Against Defenders
Giving a rook for a minor piece can be justified when that piece is the only defender of a mating square, color complex or entry route and the resulting attack has lasting force. The material label is secondary to the defensive function removed.
Positional vs Speculative Compensation
A sacrifice can be correct without forcing mate if compensation is durable: exposed king, trapped pieces, permanent passed pawn, domination or sustained initiative. Speculative sacrifices differ because the compensation is uncertain or depends on practical difficulty rather than objective force. Be explicit about which category you are claiming.
Verification Workflow
Analyze the sacrifice without an engine first, enumerate defensive branches, identify the endpoint and only then use an engine to test missed resources. Engine confirmation should verify the calculation, not replace the explanation of why the sacrifice works.
A familiar sacrifice pattern is a candidate. Best-defense calculation determines whether it is sound.

Greek Gift / Classical Bishop Sacrifice
The Greek Gift / classical bishop sacrifice is the Bxh7+/Bxh2+ family in which the bishop sacrifice exposes or drags the castled king and enables knight/queen entry. The pattern is not sound from appearance alone.
Bxh7+ / Bxh2+ Geometry
Canonical Bxh7+/Bxh2+ geometry usually requires the bishop already attacking the h-pawn and follow-up pieces able to enter with tempo. Exact coordinates must be checked from the actual position.
Can the King Capture?
Whether the king can capture is the central calculation question. If Kxh7/Kxh2 walks into a forcing attack, the sacrifice may work; if the king can accept and later escape/consolidate, the bishop is simply lost.
Knight Entry
Knight entry—commonly Ng5/Ng4—is a frequent continuation because it checks or controls critical escape squares. The knight must have stable access and sufficient support.
Queen Entry
Queen entry—often Qh5/Qh4 or related routes—is usually necessary to sustain threats after the bishop is given. If the queen cannot enter quickly, the attack often runs out.
Escape Squares
Escape squares such as g8/g1, g6/g3, h6/h3, f8/f1 and central routes must be calculated concretely; the pattern cannot be reduced to one forced king route.
Defensive Resources
Defensive resources include declining the sacrifice, returning toward shelter, bringing a knight/bishop/queen to defend h7/h2, exchanging attackers, counterattacking or using central escape. Best defense must be searched explicitly.
Greek Gift Anti-Pattern
A Greek-Gift anti-pattern has the visual Bxh7+ ingredients but lacks one necessary condition—queen entry, knight access, escape control, defender removal, or attacking development. Such examples are essential to prevent pattern overconfidence.
Greek Gift Model Games
Model games should include both successful and unsuccessful Greek Gifts and avoid attributing intention to historical players without sourced annotations.
