Legal Moves, Illegal Moves & Legal Positions

Learn what makes a chess move legal, why geometric movement is not enough, how king safety restricts moves, and what makes a position illegal.

Knowing how a piece moves is only the first layer of chess. A movement pattern may be geometrically possible and still be illegal in the actual position.

The decisive question is:

Does this move satisfy every rule and leave my own king safe?

That distinction turns movement knowledge into legal play.

A rook may have an open line to a square and still be forbidden to move there. A king may be geometrically adjacent to an empty square and still be forbidden to enter it. A pinned chessman may attack a square even when it cannot legally move to that square.

The distinction is fundamental:

geometric possibility is not the same thing as legal permission.

A chess move must satisfy more than the movement pattern of the chosen chessman.

At minimum, a proposed move has to survive several questions:

  1. Is it this player's turn?
  2. Does the chessman move that way?
  3. Is the destination allowed by occupancy?
  4. If the chessman slides, is the path clear?
  5. If a special rule is involved, are its conditions satisfied?
  6. Does the move leave the player's own king safe?

The last question is the major new layer.

Key idea

A move can obey a chessman's movement geometry and still be illegal.

Example: moving a pinned blocker

Position concept:

  • White king on e1;
  • White rook on e2;
  • Black rook on e8;
  • no chessman between e2 and e8.

The White rook can geometrically move horizontally from e2 to d2.

But if it leaves the e-file, the Black rook's line reaches the White king.

Therefore Re2-d2 is geometrically consistent with rook movement but illegal because it exposes White's own king to check.

Under the current FIDE Laws, a move is legal when all relevant requirements of Articles 3.1–3.9 are fulfilled.

In practice, that can be translated into a simple legality sequence.

Checklist

Movement

  • Does the chessman move according to its rule?

Occupancy

  • Is the destination free of a friendly chessman?
  • If it is a capture, is an opponent's chessman on the relevant capture square?

Path

  • If rook, bishop, or queen: are all intervening squares clear?

Special conditions

  • If pawn double move, en passant, promotion, or castling is involved: are the exact conditions satisfied?

King safety

  • Is the moving side's king safe in the resulting position?

If any required condition fails, the move is not legal.

Legality is evaluated in the resulting position

This point matters.

A move can begin from a position where the king is safe and still be illegal because the final position leaves that king attacked.

Likewise, when a side is already in check, a move is legal only if the resulting position removes the check.

So legality is not determined by asking:

"Can this chessman normally move there?"

It is determined by asking:

"After this complete move, does the resulting position satisfy the Laws?"

Illegal moves

A move is illegal when it fails to satisfy the relevant move requirements.

This can happen in many ways.

Wrong movement geometry

Examples:

  • bishop moves horizontally;
  • rook moves diagonally;
  • knight moves like a bishop;
  • pawn moves backward.

These already fail before king safety or any special rule needs to be checked.

Illegal occupancy or path

Examples:

  • move onto a friendly-occupied square;
  • rook moves through a blocker;
  • bishop jumps over an intervening chessman;
  • pawn advances into an occupied forward square.

King moves into attack

A king may be geometrically able to step onto an adjacent square but legally forbidden because that destination is attacked by an opposing chessman.

This is one of the most important differences between:

  • geometric king reach;
  • legal king movement.

Moving a chessman that exposes its own king

A chessman may be acting as a blocker between:

  • the king;
  • an opposing rook, bishop, or queen.

If that chessman moves away and the opposing line then attacks the king, the move is illegal.

This is the rules-level origin of an absolute pin to the king.

Terminology

At this stage:

  • pinned to the king means moving the chessman away in the relevant way would expose its own king;
  • the resulting move is illegal.

Pins become important tactical motifs later; here, the key point is simply that a pinned piece may be unable to move legally.

Ignoring an existing check

When the king is in check, a move that does not remove every current attack on that king is illegal.

Example:

  • Black rook checks White king on the e-file;
  • White moves an unrelated pawn on the a-file;
  • White king remains attacked.

The pawn move may be completely normal geometrically.

It is still illegal because the king remains in check.

Illegal special move

Special moves add further conditions that can make otherwise familiar movement illegal.

Examples:

  • castling after the king has already moved;
  • castling through an attacked transit square;
  • delayed en passant;
  • treating promotion as optional;
  • choosing an illegal promotion piece.

The move geometry alone does not resolve those cases.

Tournament consequences belong elsewhere

An illegal move can have competition penalties after it is physically made or completed.

Those procedures depend on:

  • time control;
  • competition rules;
  • whether the move was completed;
  • whether the arbiter or opponent intervenes.

That is not intrinsic move legality.

Test your understanding against these eight move types:

  1. a bishop tries to move horizontally;
  2. a rook tries to cross a blocker;
  3. a knight jumps over blockers to an empty legal destination;
  4. a king tries to move onto an attacked square;
  5. a pinned rook tries to move away and expose its king;
  6. a side in check makes an unrelated move;
  7. a pawn tries to move backward;
  8. an ordinary move follows the piece geometry and leaves the king safe.

For each case, classify the move as legal or illegal and name the exact condition that decides it.

What an illegal position is

A position can also be illegal.

Under the FIDE definition, a position is illegal when it cannot have been reached by any series of legal moves.

That is a stronger statement than:

  • unusual;
  • ugly;
  • strategically terrible;
  • extremely unlikely.

A strange position can still be perfectly legal.

Because pawns can promote, a legal position may contain:

  • two queens of the same color;
  • three rooks;
  • three bishops;
  • three knights.

Those arrangements may be rare, but rarity does not make them illegal.

Likewise, a side can have:

  • almost no material;
  • a king far from its starting square;
  • pawns on unexpected files.

If the position could have arisen through legal play, it can be legal.

Clearly illegal example: nine pawns of one color

Each side begins with eight pawns.

Chess has rules that:

  • move pawns;
  • capture pawns;
  • promote pawns into other chessmen.

There is no legal rule that creates an additional pawn.

Therefore a position containing nine White pawns cannot have arisen from the standard initial position through legal moves.

That is a simple illegal-position example.

Clearly illegal example: adjacent kings

Kings attack adjacent squares.

If two kings occupy adjacent squares, each attacks the other's square.

A legal move cannot leave or place its own king under attack.

Therefore a position with adjacent kings cannot be reached through a legal move sequence.

Adjacent kings attack one another, so that board state is illegal.

Determining whether a complicated position could have arisen legally can require reconstructing earlier play.

That can become a deep chess-composition discipline called retroanalysis.

For ordinary rules play, the useful distinction is between positions that could arise legally and positions that could not.

Own-king safety as the central legality constraint

A player may never make a move that:

  • leaves their own king in check;
  • exposes their own king to check.

This rule unifies several beginner situations.

A pinned blocker

A chessman blocks a line toward its own king.

Moving it away exposes the king.

Illegal.

A king enters an attacked square

The king moves onto a square controlled by the opponent.

Illegal.

A player ignores check

The king is already attacked and remains attacked after the move.

Illegal.

A capture fails to solve the problem

A player captures one attacker but another line remains on the king.

Illegal.

A move opens a different attack

A move removes the original danger but accidentally opens another attack on the same king.

Still illegal.

Key idea

Your own king must be safe after every legal move.

This is not advice.

It is a rule.

A crucial distinction is:

a chessman can attack a square even when moving there would be illegal because its own king would be exposed.

FIDE makes this distinction explicit.

That prevents a paradox around kings.

Pinned chessman still attacks

Return to the earlier example:

  • White king e1;
  • White rook e2;
  • Black rook e8.

The White rook is pinned to its king.

Moving the rook horizontally away from the e-file could be illegal.

But the rook still attacks squares horizontally according to its rook geometry.

For example, if the position otherwise permits it, the rook attacks h2 even though Rh2 itself would expose White's king.

Why this matters for king movement

A king is forbidden from moving onto an attacked square.

If attacked-square status depended only on whether the attacker itself had a legal move, a king could sometimes walk into the geometric capture range of a pinned chessman.

The Laws do not allow that interpretation.

Warning

Pinned does not mean "attacks nothing."

A pinned chessman may be unable to make a particular legal move while still attacking squares for king-safety purposes.

Attack map vs move list

This suggests two different maps of a position:

Legal move list

  • moves the side may actually play.

Attack map

  • squares attacked under the rules definition.

They overlap heavily.

They are not identical.

A later board-vision guide develops attack maps and geometry systematically.

Kings and mutual attack

Each king attacks the adjacent squares around it.

Therefore one king cannot legally move onto a square adjacent to the opposing king.

If it did:

  • the destination would be attacked by the opposing king;
  • the moving king would be in check.

This explains the familiar rule:

the kings may not stand next to each other.

It is not a separate mysterious exception.

It follows directly from:

  • king attack geometry;
  • own-king safety.

Kings can oppose each other with one square between

The kings may face one another with a square between them if neither king occupies an attacked square.

Example:

  • White king e4;
  • Black king e6;
  • e5 between them.

This relationship later becomes important in king-and-pawn endgames.

But the legal foundation is simple:

  • they are not adjacent;
  • neither occupies the other's attacked square.

A complete move in chess must satisfy the rules of the resulting position.

The central distinctions are:

Geometric move

The chessman's movement pattern permits the route/destination.

All relevant rules are satisfied, especially own-king safety.

Illegal move

One or more required move conditions fail.

Illegal position

No sequence of legal moves can have reached it.

Attacked square

A square can count as attacked even when the attacking chessman is constrained from legally moving there because of its own king.

King safety

A legal move never leaves or places the moving side's king in check.
