Comparing Candidate Moves & the Final Blunder Check

Learn how to compare calculated candidates, manage unresolved lines, reset to the root position and perform a final opponent checks-captures-threats scan before committing to a move.

Calculation becomes useful only when surviving candidates can be compared and one move can be selected with reasonable confidence.

The final phase has two jobs:

  1. compare the evidence from each branch;
  2. reset to the real board and verify the intended move one last time.

Comparable Endpoints

Two candidates should not be compared at radically different stages of resolution.

Candidate A may require eight plies because a forcing sequence must settle. Candidate B may need only two plies plus a structural evaluation.

Depth can differ while endpoints remain comparable if:

  • temporary material has resolved;
  • immediate tactical contact is understood;
  • king safety can be judged;
  • major positional consequences are visible.

Candidate Ranking

Use explicit factors rather than emotion:

  • endpoint evaluation;
  • king safety;
  • material and compensation;
  • activity and initiative;
  • tactical stability;
  • quality of the opponent's best defense;
  • unresolved critical branches.

A spectacular move receives no bonus for beauty. A simple move receives no penalty for looking boring.

Objective Result vs Ease of Evaluation

A position can be objectively good but difficult to understand. Another can be slightly less ambitious but very clear.

For pure analytical comparison, establish the objective differences first. Practical constraints such as clock, complexity and risk belong to practical decision-making and can be added later.

Keeping the layers separate prevents "I don't like this position" from becoming an unexamined objective claim.

Best Move vs Good Move

Several moves can be good. Calculation tries to distinguish whether one candidate creates a clearly superior endpoint or whether several are effectively competitive.

Do not force false precision when the evidence does not justify it.

Confidence and Unresolved Lines

If candidate A appears strongest but contains an unresolved defensive branch, preserve that uncertainty.

Useful labels include:

  • verified enough to compare;
  • unresolved critical branch;
  • refuted;
  • transposes to known endpoint.

A fully verified candidate should not be compared with an optimistic fantasy version of an unfinished one.

Reset Before the Final Decision

Deep calculation can make an imagined position feel more vivid than the real one.

Before moving:

  1. clear the variation tree;
  2. return to the actual root position;
  3. confirm all real piece locations;
  4. confirm side to move;
  5. verify that the intended move is legal.

This prevents branch contamination from surviving into the final decision.

Final Blunder Check

Imagine only the intended move from the real root, then scan the opponent's immediate resources.

Checks

Does your move expose your king or remove a critical defender?

Captures

Can the moved piece be taken? Did another piece become loose?

Direct threats

Is there mate, promotion, a fork or another tactical threat?

Opened geometry

Which file, rank or diagonal changed because your piece left its square?

Assumptions

Was the defender actually pinned? Was the expected reply really forced? Is the destination square truly safe?

This is a safety layer, not a substitute for full calculation.

Use positions with two serious candidates.

For each:

  1. write the endpoint and evaluation;
  2. record any unresolved branch;
  3. compare the candidates explicitly;
  4. select a move;
  5. perform the final blunder check from the root.

Then verify with analysis.

FAQ

Is the final blunder check enough by itself?

No. It catches immediate tactical failures after a move has been selected but does not replace candidate generation, calculation or evaluation.

What if two moves seem equally good?

Record them as roughly equivalent unless further calculation reveals a meaningful difference. Not every position has a practically distinguishable single best move.

Why reset to the root before moving?

To clear branch-state contamination and verify the move against the actual board rather than an imagined endpoint.

Key idea

Good calculation can still be ruined by one final unverified assumption. Finish at the real board, not inside the analysis tree.

Comparison Under Uncertainty

Suppose candidate A looks slightly better but contains one unclear branch, while candidate B is fully understood and roughly equal. Pure analysis should record that distinction rather than silently treating A's optimistic endpoint as proven.

The table does not choose the move automatically. It makes the evidence visible.

Final Verification Should Be Short

The final blunder check is intentionally narrow. If it turns into a complete recalculation of every branch, the decision process becomes unstable and repetitive.

Its purpose is to catch immediate tactical facts that may have been obscured by deep analysis. If the final check uncovers a serious new resource, then reopen calculation with a concrete reason.
