1. Queenless but Still Middlegame-Like

Many pieces remain. Kings exposed.

Turn the 60 Patterns Into Paired Training

The value of this reference is not the number of patterns. It is the contrast between positions that look similar but demand different conclusions. For each pair, write the smallest fact that changes the result: side to move, checking distance, pawn file, king access, reserve tempo, promotion with check, available pawn break or move-count context.

Build Counterexamples

Once you understand a pattern, deliberately construct a legal counterexample. If “rook behind the passer” works in one position, find a position where lateral activity is stronger. If the wrong-bishop rook-pawn draw works, add a second pawn that forces the king away. Counterexamples turn rules into conditional knowledge.

Explain Before You Verify

For every pattern, state three things before using a tablebase or engine:

  1. expected result;
  2. decisive mechanism;
  3. opponent's best resource.

After verification, record the first mistaken assumption, not merely the final wrong move. This converts comparative study into an error taxonomy you can use in future games.

From Pattern Recognition to Transition Recognition

The highest-level use of these patterns is recognizing destinations several moves in advance. A practical rook ending may not resemble Lucena yet, but one exchange and king move can make Lucena the relevant target. Train yourself to ask not only “what pattern is this?” but “what pattern can this become?”
