Chess Foundations is the starting point for the VeyraPlay Chess library. The goal is not to rush into openings or tactics, but to make the board itself readable: what is on it, how pieces can move, what they attack, what they defend, what material remains, and what changed after the last move.
What this topic covers
By the end of this domain, you should be able to set up the board confidently, describe the basic state of a position, move every chessman correctly at the geometric level, recognize captures and attacks, notice defenders, compare material, follow simple capture–recapture sequences, and perform a basic safety scan before committing to a move.
These are the mechanical and observational skills that later domains assume. Full move legality, check, checkmate, castling, en passant, promotion, draws, and exceptional game states are treated rigorously in Rules & Legal Game States.
