The board does not care how much time you have left, but your decision process must. Think of a move as consuming a budget made from more than seconds. You spend attention when you hold a long variation in memory, calculation depth when you follow a forcing line, breadth when you compare candidates, and emotional control when the position has just changed unexpectedly. These costs interact. Ten calm minutes can be more useful than fifteen minutes spent repeatedly checking the same branch.
The budget also has a future. Spending six minutes on a quiet improving move is not free if the position is likely to produce a pawn break, sacrifice or endgame transition two moves later. Good time management therefore includes a forecast: where are the next expensive decisions likely to occur?
A Compact Over-the-Board Workflow
For a normal non-forced position, a practical workflow can be compressed to:
- Read the change: what did the opponent's last move alter?
- Check danger: checks, captures, threats, loose pieces and king exposure.
- Classify criticality: routine, important or highly forcing/irreversible.
- Generate a small serious candidate set.
- Calculate in proportion to the decision.
- Compare endpoints, not attractive first moves.

The reset matters. Once the move is played, the previous analysis becomes context rather than truth. The opponent is entitled to surprise you again.
