Rating, Norm and Title Are Three Different Things
A rating is a statistical measurement; a norm is a qualifying performance satisfying additional tournament conditions; a title is a regulatory award. Treating them as interchangeable creates some of the most common misunderstandings in competitive chess.
GM, IM, WGM and WIM can require norms plus a separate title-rating threshold. FM, CM, WFM and WCM have rating routes. Designated championship results can also produce direct titles or norms under a versioned Direct Titles table—the table effective from 1 January 2026 must be used for 2026-current claims.
FIDE player titles are regulatory awards, not informal rating labels. Some arise from direct rating thresholds, others from norms plus a separate rating requirement, and some from direct-title results in designated events.

GM
GM (Grandmaster) is an open FIDE player title.
IM
IM (International Master) is an open FIDE player title.

Open vs Women's Titles
Open titles and women's titles are separate title categories with different regulatory thresholds; open titles are not restricted by gender.
Titles Are Not Rating Bands
Titles are not rating bands. A player does not cease to be GM/IM/etc. merely because a later rating falls below a typical title threshold.

A performance rating is calculated from result and average opponent rating under the title/rating tables.
Title Performance
A title performance is a performance meeting the specified performance and opponent-average thresholds for a title.
Title Norm
A title norm is a title performance that also satisfies additional tournament/opponent/federation/title-mix requirements.
Current Norm Thresholds
GM Performance Threshold — Current
Current GM title-performance threshold is 2600, with minimum opponent average 2380 under the 2024 title regulations.
IM Performance Threshold — Current
Current IM title-performance threshold is 2450, with minimum opponent average 2230.
WGM Performance Threshold — Current
Current WGM title-performance threshold is 2400, with minimum opponent average 2180.
WIM Performance Threshold — Current
Current WIM title-performance threshold is 2250, with minimum opponent average 2030.
Minimum Opponent Average
Norm eligibility includes minimum opponent-average/floor rules; one opponent rating may be adjusted to the title-specific floor under the current regulation.
Titled-Opponent Mix
Norms require a specified mix of titled opponents; for GM/IM/WGM/WIM current rules include title-holder and specific-title proportions.
Federation Mix
Norms also have federation-mix requirements and defined exceptions; do not reduce a norm to performance rating alone.
Minimum Games / Rounds
The ordinary minimum is 9 games, with specific current exceptions for qualifying World/Continental team events and World Cup structures.
Tournament Conditions
Title tournaments must meet current conditions including rate of play, rounds/day, registration and arbiter requirements.

Title Remains after Later Rating Drop
FIDE player titles are normally valid for life once confirmed, subject to the exceptional ethical/fair-play revocation provisions in the regulations.
What a Direct Title Is
A direct title is awarded from a designated championship result/place under the Direct Titles table, subject to the current application/confirmation and rating conditions.
Direct Title vs Norm
Direct titles are distinct from accumulating ordinary norms; some designated results award a title directly or a norm directly.
Championship Results
Championship results can confer direct titles/norms only where the current Direct Titles table specifies them.

The current Direct Titles table effective 1 January 2026 governs designated 2026 direct-title results.
Conditional Direct Title
A direct title can be conditional when the applicant has not yet met the immediate-award minimum rating required by the title regulations.
Minimum Rating for Immediate Award
Current immediate-award minimum ratings for direct titles are GM 2300, IM 2200, FM 2100, CM 2000; WGM 2100, WIM 2000, WFM 1900, WCM 1800, with the stated current exceptions/30-game condition.
Direct-Title Rules Are Versioned
Direct-title rules are strongly versioned. Event tables can change from year to year; always cite the table effective for the event date.
Title Practice / Worked Cases
Title worked cases should distinguish performance rating, norm qualification, norm-game total, separate title rating, direct result and conditional/immediate award.
Why a 2600 Performance Is Not Automatically a GM Norm
Performance level is only one requirement. A norm also depends on event eligibility, number of games and opponent composition, including the title and federation mix specified by the current regulations. A player can therefore produce a number that looks like a GM-level performance without producing a valid GM norm.
Likewise, achieving three valid norms does not replace the separate GM title-rating requirement of 2500. Direct titles form another path again and must be checked against the table effective for the event date.
For durable content, never summarize title eligibility as a single rating number. Store title sought → event → games → performance → opponent mix → norm status → accumulated norm games → separate title rating → direct-title provision, if any.
