These patterns are deliberately comparative. Final versions should use legality-checked diagrams.
1. Uncastled King, Closed Center
King remains central. Center cannot open. Defenders coordinated.
Lesson: uncastled ≠ exposed.
2. Same King, One Central Break Added
One pawn break opens e-file in one tempo. Attacker developed.
Lesson: access can transform king safety instantly.
3. Development Lead without Opening Lines
Attacker has more developed pieces. Center completely locked.
Lesson: development lead needs a conversion mechanism.
4. Three Attackers vs Two Defenders — Attack Fails
One attacker blocked. One defender can force queen trade.
Lesson: raw counting is insufficient.
5. Equal Counts — Attack Works
One defender pinned. One attacker creates double threat.
Lesson: functional force matters.
6. Queen-Only Attack
Queen gives checks. Other pieces undeveloped. King escapes while defender develops.
Lesson: one powerful piece is not local superiority.
7. Quiet Final Attacker
Immediate check only repeats. Rook lift brings decisive third piece.
Lesson: bring the last piece.
8. Same-Side Storm Works
Center locked. Own king inaccessible. g-pawn creates hook and opens file.
Lesson: same-side pawn storm can be positionally justified.
9. Same-Side Storm Fails
Center fluid. Pawn push opens own king. Opponent central break arrives.
Lesson: shelter cost matters.
10. Opposite-Side Race: Pawns Farther but Attack Slower
Pawns advanced. Rook not developed. No open file.
Opponent has one-contact break.
Lesson: pawn distance ≠ attacking speed.
11. Pawn Hook Exists
Enemy h-pawn advanced. g-pawn can contact and force open file.
Lesson: hooks turn pawn contact into access.
12. No Hook
Pawns push into locked structure. No capture opens line.
Lesson: storm without contact can stall.
13. Defender Closes h-File
Attacker redirects to g-file created by the closing move.
Lesson: adapt the access route.
Pattern 14: Fianchetto Bishop Removed, No Attack
Bishop exchanged. Queen cannot enter. Defenders stable.
Lesson: missing bishop ≠ automatic winning attack.
15. Fianchetto Bishop Removed with Entry
Dark squares fixed. Queen+bishop/knight enter. Heavy pieces ready.
Lesson: color weakness needs accessibility.
16. Greek Gift Works
Bxh7+. Knight and queen enter. Defenders cannot reinforce. Escape squares controlled.
Lesson: pattern + preconditions + calculation.
17. Greek Gift Fails
Same visual setup. Defending bishop covers h7 route / queen cannot reach / king escapes.
Lesson: Bxh7+ appearance is not proof.
18. f7 Sacrifice Prevents Castling
Material given. King forced to move. e-file opens with development lead.
Lesson: sacrifice can buy time and access.
19. Exchange Sacrifice Removes Only Defender
Rook gives for bishop/knight. Color complex collapses. Queen enters.
Lesson: material can be exchanged for defensive architecture.

Lesson: route speed can decide attack.
23. Opposite-Colored Bishops Intensify Attack
Queen + attacking bishop operate on dark squares. Defending light bishop cannot contest.
Lesson: OCB middlegame can favor attacker.
24. Opposite-Colored Bishops, No King Exposure
Queens off. No entry. Structure stable.
Lesson: OCB does not automatically mean attack.
25. Aimless Checks
King driven from exposed square into safer shelter.
Lesson: checks can improve defender.
26. Quiet King-Hunt Move
Attacker closes return square before checking again.
Lesson: control escape, then force.
27. Attack Converts to Material
Defender gives exchange to stop mate.
Lesson: the attack has succeeded even if mate disappears.
28. Attack Converts to Endgame
Queen trade is forced. Attacker enters clearly favorable ending.
Lesson: take the conversion.
29. Material Grab Kills Attack
Queen takes pawn. Defender trades queens/reinforces.
Lesson: temporary initiative can be worth more than immediate pawn.
30. Attack Has Ended
Lines close. Attackers exchanged. Attacker keeps pushing shelter pawns anyway.
Lesson: reassess when the operating conditions disappear.
31. Defender Central Counterstrike
Flank attack looks strong. Center opens against attacker's king first.
Lesson: the whole board remains relevant.
32. Defender Returns Material
Extra pawn/exchange returned. Queens traded. King consolidates.
Lesson: attacking evaluation must include defensive material return.
33. Failed Attack Diagnosis
Same attack repeated with one missing prerequisite in each version:
- target;
- force;
- access;
- time;
- king safety;
- verification.
Lesson: diagnose the first missing condition rather than labeling the whole idea “bad”.
How to Use Comparative Patterns
Do not memorize the 33 positions as isolated motifs. For each pair, identify the single changed variable: one defender, one open file, one tempo, one hook, one flight square or one available central break. Then explain why that variable changes the evaluation.
This trains causal pattern recognition. Instead of “this looks like a Greek Gift,” you learn “the sacrifice works because the king can capture, the knight arrives with tempo, the queen has entry and the critical escape square is controlled.”
Pattern Families
The examples can be grouped into five reusable families:
- readiness patterns — target, development, local force and access;
- line-opening patterns — hooks, files, shelter and sacrifices;
- coordination patterns — final attacker, rook lift, color complexes;
- momentum patterns — purposeful checks, quiet attacking moves, counterplay;
- conversion patterns — material, ending, structural gain and attack expiry.
When you miss an attacking decision, classify the error into one of these families before studying another random puzzle.
Counterexample Training
For every successful attacking pattern, create or find a near-twin where it fails. Change one defender, add one flight square, close one file or give the defender one central break. Counterexamples prevent pattern recognition from becoming pattern obedience.
From Pattern Recognition to Move Selection
Pattern recognition should narrow the candidate set, not choose the move automatically. After recognizing a familiar attacking shape, perform three checks:
- difference check — what differs from the pattern you remember?
- defense check — what is the strongest resource created by that difference?
- conversion check — if the direct attack fails, what permanent gain remains?
This is especially important in attacks because one flight square, one defensive knight or one tempo can reverse the evaluation of an otherwise identical-looking position.
The strongest attacking education compares positions where one changed detail turns the same-looking attack from sound to unsound.
