Chess fundamentals become useful only when you can combine them. Knowing the rook's movement rule in isolation is different from looking at a position and noticing, in one pass, that a line is blocked, a piece is attacked, a defender has moved, and a capture would lose material after the recapture.
This practice guide mixes the core beginner skills from the Chess Foundations collection. It is not a tactics test and it does not assume that you already know every special rule. The goal is simpler: read the board accurately before adding the full legality layer.
What this practice set tests
You should be comfortable with six connected skill groups:
- Board and setup — orientation, piece counts, starting squares, and the initial position.
- Movement — how every piece travels, how blockers work, and how pawn movement differs from pawn capture.
- Attack and defense — attacked pieces, controlled squares, defenders, and local attacker–defender relationships.
- Material — the approximate 1–3–3–5–9 scale and quick material comparisons.
- Exchanges — captures, recaptures, and simple net-material outcomes.
- Threats and safety — what changed after the last move and what could be lost immediately.
You do not need advanced calculation, opening theory, positional strategy, or complete king-safety rules to use this set.
How to use the exercises
Work slowly enough to explain why an answer is correct.
For movement questions, identify the exact reason a move works or fails:
- correct or incorrect movement pattern;
- blocked path;
- friendly piece on the destination;
- enemy piece available to capture;
- pawn movement/capture mismatch;
- board edge.
For material questions, count the whole short sequence, not only the first capture.
For safety questions, update the position after every move. A move can change more than the square where the piece lands: it can open a rook line, remove a defender, expose another piece, or create a new attack somewhere else.
When a king appears in a movement exercise, treat the question as movement geometry unless the exercise explicitly asks about legal king safety. The dedicated rules guides add that complete layer.
Part 1: Board setup and orientation
Exercise 1 — Orient the board
You sit down with an empty board.
Question: What color should the square nearest your right hand be?
Answer: Light.
A reliable setup check is light on right.
Exercise 2 — Rebuild the starting position
Without copying a diagram, place all thirty-two chessmen.
Check your work with this sequence:
- White pieces occupy ranks 1 and 2.
- Black pieces occupy ranks 8 and 7.
- Each side has eight pawns.
- The corner pieces are rooks.
- Moving inward: rook → knight → bishop.
- The queen starts on a square of her own color.
- The king occupies the remaining central back-rank square.
- White moves first.
If you can rebuild the position from those rules rather than from visual memory alone, your setup knowledge is robust.
Exercise 3 — Find the errors
Create or inspect a starting-position diagram containing several deliberate mistakes, such as:
- the board rotated ninety degrees;
- king and queen swapped;
- a bishop and knight exchanged;
- one pawn missing;
- a rook moved away from a corner.
List every error before correcting anything.
Why this matters: error detection is a stronger skill than simply copying a correct setup.
Part 2: Movement and blockers
Exercise 4 — Which slider can reach the target?
For each start/target pair on an otherwise empty board, decide whether a rook, bishop, or queen could reach the target in one ordinary move.
Use four kinds of target:
- same rank;
- same file;
- same diagonal;
- no shared line.
Answer pattern:
- rook: rank or file;
- bishop: diagonal;
- queen: rank, file, or diagonal;
- none of the three: unrelated square.
Exercise 5 — Stop at the first blocker
Place a rook on an open file with two pieces farther along that file.
Ask:
- Which squares can the rook reach before the first piece?
- If the first piece is friendly, can the rook enter its square?
- If the first piece is enemy, can the rook capture it?
- Can the rook reach anything beyond that first occupied square?
Answer: the first occupied square ends the rook's ray. A friendly piece blocks the destination; an enemy piece may be captured; squares beyond it are unavailable.
Repeat the same exercise with a bishop and queen.
Exercise 6 — Knight, king, or pawn?
Identify the piece from the description:
- Jumps to fixed L-shaped destinations.
- Moves one adjacent square at a time geometrically.
- Moves forward but captures diagonally.
- May make a two-square forward move only from its starting position if the path is clear.
Answers: knight, king, pawn, pawn.
Exercise 7 — Pawn movement is not pawn attack
Place a White pawn with:
- an empty square directly ahead;
- an enemy piece diagonally ahead;
- another enemy piece directly ahead.
Ask which destinations are movement squares and which are capture squares.
The pawn may advance into an eligible empty square in front. It attacks diagonally forward. It does not capture the piece directly in front.
Repeat with a Black pawn to verify that direction reverses.
Part 3: Captures, attacks, and controlled squares
Exercise 8 — Action or relationship?
Classify each statement as a capture, an attack on a piece, or control of an empty square.
- A rook could take a bishop on e4.
- A knight attacks f5, and f5 is empty.
- A bishop moves to c6 and removes the Black knight there.
- A pawn attacks an empty diagonal square.
- A queen has an unobstructed line to an enemy rook.
The important distinction is that a capture is an action, while attack/control describes a relationship that already exists in the current position.
Exercise 9 — Count local attackers and defenders
Choose one occupied square in a simple position.
List:
- every enemy piece attacking that square;
- every friendly piece defending it;
- any blocker whose movement would change the relationship.
Do not decide yet whether an exchange is good. First build the local map accurately.
Exercise 10 — Contested square
Choose one empty central square attacked by pieces from both sides.
Question: Is the square “owned” by one side simply because that side attacks it?
Answer: not necessarily. A square can be attacked or controlled by multiple pieces from both sides. Strategic ownership requires more context than a single attack count.
Part 4: Piece safety and defenders
Exercise 11 — Undefended does not automatically mean lost
Find or build a position containing an undefended piece that is not currently attacked.
Question: Is the piece hanging merely because no friendly piece defends it?
Answer: no. Undefended describes the lack of friendly protection. Immediate vulnerability also depends on what the opponent can actually attack or capture.
Exercise 12 — Choose a defensive response
Create five simple positions in which one of these response families is clearly available:
- move the attacked piece;
- defend it;
- capture the attacker;
- block a sliding attack;
- create a clearly forcing counter-threat.
For each position, name the response family before trying to find the strongest move.
This builds a menu of defensive ideas without requiring advanced calculation.
Exercise 13 — What did the defender move away from?
Start with a piece defended exactly once. Move its only defender elsewhere.
Ask:
- what did the move accomplish on its destination square?
- what protection disappeared from the original position?
- can the opponent now capture something that was previously safe?
This is a crucial beginner lesson: your move can change the safety of a different piece.
Part 5: Material and exchanges
Use the conventional beginner approximation:

The king is not given an ordinary exchange value because losing the king is not a legal material event: the game is decided through checkmate, not king capture.
Exercise 14 — Quick material comparison
White has:
- queen;
- two rooks;
- two bishops;
- one knight;
- six pawns.
Black has:
- queen;
- two rooks;
- one bishop;
- two knights;
- five pawns.
Using 1–3–3–5–9:
- White: 34;
- Black: 33.
Answer: White is approximately one pawn ahead in raw material.
Do not turn that into “White is winning”. Material is one evaluation factor, not the result of the game.
Exercise 15 — Count the recapture
A rook captures a defended bishop and is immediately recaptured by a pawn.
Using approximate values:
- material gained: 3;
- material lost: 5;
- net: about −2.
The first capture wins a bishop. The sequence loses material.
Exercise 16 — Is the capture actually profitable?
Classify each simple sequence:
- pawn captures an undefended pawn;
- bishop captures an undefended rook;
- queen captures a defended pawn and is recaptured;
- pawn captures a defended knight and is then recaptured;
- rook captures a defended bishop and is recaptured.
Do not stop after “I can take it.” Ask:
What can take me back?
That single question prevents a large class of elementary material blunders.
Part 6: Threats and move safety
Exercise 17 — What changed?
After an opponent's move, do not immediately look for your own plan.
Answer five questions first:
- Where did the moved piece come from?
- Where did it go?
- What does it attack from the new square?
- What line or square did it stop defending?
- Did its departure uncover an attack by another piece?
A move changes both its destination and the relationships around its old square.
Exercise 18 — Find the elementary blunder
Use six one-move mistakes:
- a piece is left en prise;
- a piece moves onto an enemy pawn attack for no return;
- a blocker moves and exposes the queen to a rook;
- a queen takes a defended pawn and is recaptured;
- a sole defender moves away and another piece falls;
- a knight jumps over blockers correctly but lands on an unsafe square.
For each position:
- identify the mistake;
- name the foundation concept involved;
- suggest a safer alternative if one is obvious.
Exercise 19 — The beginner safety scan
Before playing a candidate move, ask:
- What is attacked now?
- What changed after the opponent's last move?
- Is my destination occupied by a friendly piece?
- Is my destination attacked?
- What is my moving piece defending now?
- What line opens when it leaves?
- If I capture, what can recapture me?
This is not a complete thinking system. It is a compact anti-blunder routine built from concepts you already know.
Mixed foundations challenge
Use one simple middlegame-like position with no advanced tactical trick as its point.
Without moving any pieces, produce a short position report:
Board relationships
- Which pieces are attacked?
- Which attacked pieces are defended?
- Which pieces are undefended?
- Which sliders are blocked?
- Which important empty squares are attacked by both sides?
Material
- Is material equal?
- If not, what is the approximate difference?
- Are the two sides' material compositions different even if the totals are similar?
Immediate safety
- What did the last move change?
- Is there an obvious free piece?
- Is there a simple capture–recapture sequence worth checking?
- Does either side have an immediate piece threat?
The purpose is not to discover a brilliant move. The purpose is to read the position accurately enough that later tactical and strategic thinking starts from correct information.
Readiness check
You are ready to add the complete rules layer when you can usually do the following without guessing:
Board and movement
- orient and set up the board from memory;
- identify every piece;
- describe every ordinary movement pattern;
- apply blocker rules to rooks, bishops, and queens;
- remember that knights jump;
- separate pawn movement from pawn capture.
Attack and defense
- distinguish a capture from an attack relationship;
- recognize attacked and controlled squares;
- identify basic defenders;
- count simple local attackers and defenders;
- understand that undefended does not automatically mean lost.
Material and exchanges
- use 1–3–3–5–9 as an approximation;
- compare simple material inventories;
- explain why the numbers are not exact;
- follow a short capture–recapture sequence;
- distinguish “I can capture it” from “the sequence wins material”.
Threats and safety
- ask what changed after every opponent move;
- notice when a defender moved away;
- notice when a line opened;
- check whether a destination is attacked;
- look for obvious recaptures before committing to a capture.

What comes next: complete move legality
The foundation guides intentionally separate movement geometry from full move legality.
You already know that pieces attack squares and that a king moves one adjacent square geometrically. The next layer explains the consequences that make chess a complete legal game:
- what check means;
- how check must be answered;
- which king moves are illegal because the destination is attacked;
- checkmate;
- stalemate;
- castling;
- en passant;
- promotion;
- repetition and move-count draws;
- other legal game-ending conditions.
A useful mental model is:
board ↓ pieces ↓ movement ↓ occupancy and blockers ↓ capture geometry ↓ attack and control ↓ defense ↓ material relationships ↓ threats ↓ basic move safety ↓ complete legality
If the first ten layers feel natural, you have the mechanical foundation needed to learn check, legal king safety, and the rest of the rules without confusing them with basic piece movement.
