For any practical rule, ask four questions:

Complexity is not randomness. Useful complexity creates problems you understand better than the opponent. Randomness merely increases the number of ways both players can go wrong.

When a recommendation sounds universal, add: “provided that…”. If you cannot complete that sentence with a meaningful condition, the advice is probably too vague to guide a real decision.
