Rook endings are among the most common and most exacting practical endings. The central hierarchy is:
activity → king cut-off → checking geometry → passed-pawn support/restriction → theoretical destination
The famous Lucena, Philidor and Vancura positions are not decorative names. They are reference positions for exact methods.
In rook endings, active rook geometry often matters more than one pawn of material.

Active Rook

Active King
An active king supports promotion, shields from checks and attacks the defender's rook/pawns. King cut-off is often the main limiting factor.
Cut Off the Enemy King
Cutting off the enemy king with the rook reduces access to the passer or key defensive squares. Count files/ranks of exclusion and whether the rook can maintain them.
Checking Distance
Checking distance is the space the rook has to give checks without being attacked by the enemy king. More distance often improves defensive checking efficiency.
Side Checks

Passive Defense

Lucena as a Winning Mechanism
The Lucena family illustrates a typical winning problem: the stronger king has reached the promotion zone but must shelter from checks. “Building a bridge” is the famous solution in canonical positions, yet the deeper lesson is creating a shield that lets the king escape checking geometry while the pawn promotes.
