Swiss Chess Pairings: Scoregroups, Colours, Byes & Acceleration

Understand how Swiss tournaments pair players without a full round robin. Learn scoregroups, pairing numbers, colour preferences, byes, floats, acceleration and why the exact FIDE pairing system and effective date matter.

Swiss Pairing Is an Algorithm, Not a Vibe

Swiss events create useful standings without requiring every participant to meet every other participant. That requires explicit rules for scoregroups, repeat opponents, colour histories, byes, floats and pairing priorities.

The FIDE Swiss framework was revised with rules applied from 1 February 2026. For a rated event, the announced pairing system and acceleration method matter, and correct pairings are intended to be objective and reproducible. “Pair people who are close in rating” is not a substitute for the actual system.

Swiss systems aim to produce meaningful standings without every participant meeting every other participant. Their rules are algorithmic and versioned.

The 2026 FIDE Swiss framework distinguishes:

  • Basic Rules;
  • General Handling Rules;
  • Dutch;
  • Dubov;
  • Burstein;
  • Lim;
  • Double-Swiss;
  • Swiss Team;
  • approved acceleration.

Core rule A Swiss pairing is not `pair nearby ratings`. It is the output of a declared pairing system with absolute and quality criteria.

Swiss Foundations

Declared Number of Rounds

Current FIDE Swiss Basic Rules require the number of rounds to be declared beforehand.

No Repeat Opponent

A fundamental Swiss rule is that two participants shall not play each other more than once, subject only to specifically defined system exceptions such as the separate Double-Swiss match structure.

Pair Similar Scores in General

In general, Swiss participants are paired with others on the same score, but system criteria/floaters can require cross-score pairings.

Odd Field

If the field to be paired is odd, one participant receives a pairing-allocated bye under the declared system.

Byes & Unplayed Rounds

Pairing-Allocated Bye

A pairing-allocated bye gives no opponent and no colour; in individual Basic Swiss it gives the points awarded for a win unless tournament rules state otherwise.

No Repeated Full-Point Bye — Current Basic Rule

Under the current Basic Swiss rule, a participant who already received a pairing-allocated bye or already scored in one round without playing as many points as a win shall not receive the pairing-allocated bye again.

Published FIDE Swiss Systems

FIDE Dutch System

The FIDE Dutch System is a published Swiss pairing system with scoregroups, brackets, floaters, colour criteria and ordered pairing-quality criteria.

Dubov System

The Dubov System is a distinct FIDE-approved Swiss system; its pairing logic should not be described as Dutch with different sorting.

Burstein System

The Burstein System is a distinct FIDE-approved Swiss system whose current framework uses tournament-derived opposition-strength concepts and its own ordered pairing rules.

Lim System

The Lim System remains a published FIDE-approved system with its own pairing and colour-allocation rules.

Double-Swiss

The Double-Swiss system, applied in the current framework from 1 February 2026, treats each pairing as a two-game match with alternating colours.

Swiss Team Pairing System

The Swiss Team Pairing System adapts Swiss principles to teams and has separate treatment of score and colours.

System Effective Dates

Pairing Vocabulary & Reproducibility

Tournament Pairing Number

A Tournament Pairing Number (TPN) is the competition's pairing-order identifier under the relevant Swiss handling/system rules; it is not the player's FIDE ID or current score.

Score Group

A scoregroup contains participants with the same score for pairing purposes.

Bracket

A pairing bracket is the group currently being paired and can include participants moved from another scoregroup.

Float

A float records that a participant is paired across scoregroups; exact up/down-floater rules depend on the declared Swiss system.

Pairing Objective / Reproducibility

Swiss pairing rules are designed to be reproducible/explainable. Pairings are not discretionary opponent selections once the system/data are fixed.

Pairings Cannot Be Altered for Favor

Pairings must not be altered to favour a participant. Corrections address rule/data errors, not desired sporting outcomes.

Colours

Colour History

Colour history records colours actually played where the system says colour sequence is meaningful; unplayed rounds may be excluded from that history under current handling rules.

Colour Difference

Colour difference is the number of Whites minus Blacks (or system-equivalent definition) and helps generate colour preference.

Colour Preference

Colour preference expresses the colour a participant should ideally receive next; systems distinguish strengths such as absolute/strong/mild preference.

Alternation

Alternation is a colour objective, not an absolute promise in every round; score/pairing constraints can take priority under system rules.

System-Specific Priority

The priority of colour criteria is system-specific. Do not import Dutch priorities into Dubov/Burstein/Lim mechanically.

Byes & Unplayed Rounds

Pairing-Allocated Bye

A pairing-allocated bye is produced by the pairing algorithm because the field is odd; it is not the same as a player-requested bye.

Requested Bye

A requested bye is an event/handling rule where a participant asks not to be paired in a round and receives the score specified by the event.

Forfeit

A forfeit is an unplayed scheduled encounter decided administratively; it differs from a pairing-allocated/requested bye.

Unplayed Round

An unplayed round is a broad data state covering byes, forfeits, withdrawal/absence and similar cases; pairing, rating and tie-break consequences can differ.

Rating Effect

Rating treatment follows rating regulations, not standings labels: unplayed games normally are not rated.

Tie-Break Effect

Tie-break regulations have explicit handling of unplayed rounds, so a bye/forfeit cannot be assigned a universal Buchholz value by folk rule.

Acceleration

Why Accelerate?

Acceleration modifies early Swiss pairing scores/brackets to reduce predictable mismatches and improve pairing/standing quality in suitable fields.

Virtual / Additional Score Concepts

Approved acceleration can use virtual/additional points for pairing only; they are not necessarily real standings points.

FIDE-Approved Accelerated Systems

The current FIDE-approved accelerated systems include the published Baku method and any other methods appearing in the current C.04.7 regulation.

No Universal Acceleration Algorithm

There is no universal acceleration algorithm. Use only the announced system/method permitted for the event.

Practice

Swiss Practice

Swiss practice should distinguish real score, pairing score, TPN, scoregroup, bracket, float, colour preference and bye/forfeit types before attempting a pairing.

Why You Should Not Hand-Fix Swiss Pairings

A pairing can look aesthetically strange and still be the correct consequence of earlier colour histories, scoregroup movement, repeat-opponent constraints and system priorities. The current 2026 Swiss handling rules emphasize objective, impartial and reproducible pairings and explicitly prohibit altering correct pairings to favour a participant.

For serious verification, record the exact system/version, participant order or TPNs, scores, previous opponents, colour histories, byes/forfeits and announced acceleration. A screenshot of the final pairing alone is usually not enough to reproduce the calculation.
