A Model Game Is Chosen for Explanatory Power
The strongest player's game is not automatically the best model. A useful model game has a reliable score, a representative position or structure, a clear strategic or tactical story, and enough annotation or analyzable context to understand why the decisions matter.
Search by Features, Not Only Names
Useful similarity filters include exact position, pawn structure, material balance, piece placement, open files, color complexes, passed pawns and thematic breaks. Two games from different openings may become excellent companions after transposing into the same structure.
Similarity Needs a Purpose
A position can be visually similar yet strategically different because one tempo, one exchanged defender or one pawn lever changes the plan. Define what you are trying to transfer: minority attack, good-knight outpost, rook activation, opposite-side race, IQP blockade, etc. Then search for that feature rather than “positions that look alike.”
Study With Prediction
Guess-the-move work is valuable when you pause before critical decisions and state candidates, evaluation and plan. A model-game library becomes more useful when you also save the specific positions that demonstrate the idea, with FEN, theme and one-sentence lesson. That turns passive reading into a reusable training set.
Build a Small Curated Set Before a Huge Collection
Five carefully chosen games that expose different plans are usually more useful than fifty games saved because they share an opening code. A compact model set should contain contrast: successful execution, strong defense, a structural transformation, a typical tactical resource and, where useful, a failure case.
Annotation Quality Matters More Than Celebrity
A famous game can be pedagogically poor if the key decisions are unexplained or the surviving score is unreliable. Prefer sources whose annotations distinguish contemporary understanding, later commentary and modern computer corrections. If annotations disagree, preserve the disagreement instead of silently merging interpretations.
Extract Decision Points
Do not study a model game only from move 1 to the result. Mark the moments where a plan could plausibly change: pawn break, exchange, king commitment, transition or tactical acceleration. Replaying from those decision points turns the game into a set of training problems rather than a story you merely recognize.
