What a Helpmate Is

A helpmate is cooperative: Black and White jointly construct a mate of Black, with Black normally making the first move. Solver logic often works backward from the desired mating picture.

Black Moves First

In the conventional helpmate stipulation Black begins. Half-move notation or an explicitly stated alternative can make White begin, so the published stipulation is authoritative.

Cooperation

Because both sides cooperate, moves are chosen to make the mating construction possible, not to resist it. This reverses practical-chess assumptions about best defense.

Cooperation and Resistance Change the Search Model

The central mistake when moving from directmates to helpmates or selfmates is keeping the same opponent model. In a helpmate, both sides cooperate to create the stipulated mate; in a selfmate, White forces a resisting Black to mate White. That changes candidate generation, move-order logic and what counts as a defensive resource.

Before solving, state the game relation explicitly: cooperative, adversarial, or some declared hybrid/series relation.

Multiple Solutions Can Be the Theme

Helpmates frequently use multiple solutions, twins or transformations to show analogous mating pictures, reciprocal functions, route changes or echoed geometry. Their artistic content may exist primarily in the relationship among those solutions. Verify each one separately, then compare piece functions and final positions across the set.

Selfmates are psychologically harder because White must force the opponent to perform an action the opponent actively avoids. When a helpmate or selfmate uses twins or multiple solutions, record what changes between them: piece roles, routes, mating squares, order of moves, line occupancy or final geometry. Parallelism, reversal and echo can be the entire reason the multiplicity exists.
