Nonogram Glossary

Look up Nonogram terminology for clues, blocks, cell states, overlap, line logic, contradiction, difficulty, uniqueness, and common alternative puzzle names.

This glossary is the canonical English vocabulary reference for VeyraPlay's standard monochrome Nonogram Guides.

Use it when a Guide, future Learn lesson, solver explanation, or interface label introduces a term you do not recognize. Definitions here are intentionally shorter than full technique Guides: the glossary tells you what a term means, while dedicated Guides explain how the deduction works.

Nonogram terminology is not perfectly standardized across books, apps, forums, puzzle publishers, and solver literature. VeyraPlay therefore uses one preferred term consistently and keeps important alternatives discoverable.

Our main choices include:

  • Nonogram as the generic puzzle name;
  • grid rather than board for the puzzle structure;
  • filled / empty / unknown for semantic cell states;
  • block as the beginner-facing name for one clue run;
  • line as the umbrella term for a row or column;
  • overlap for cells occupied by the same block across all relevant placements;
  • X mark as a representation of a confirmed empty cell.

A

Ambiguous Nonogram

A clue set with more than one completed grid satisfying all row and column clues.

An ambiguous puzzle does not have a unique solution.

Assumption

A provisional cell state considered during conditional or contradiction reasoning.

An assumption is not a confirmed mark unless the reasoning proves it.

B

Backtracking

A systematic search method that chooses a possibility, propagates consequences, and returns to an earlier choice when the branch fails.

Computer solvers can use backtracking for complete solution search and uniqueness testing. It is different from a purely human-style no-guess deduction path.

Block

One consecutive group of filled cells represented by one clue number.

If a row has clues 3 1 4, its final pattern contains a 3-cell block, then a 1-cell block, then a 4-cell block, in that order.

Run is a common technical synonym. VeyraPlay normally uses block in beginner-facing prose.

Block identity

The specific clue number to which a filled fragment or candidate placement belongs.

Block identity matters when several clues could potentially cover the same area. Two equal-length clues are still distinct ordered blocks.

Block reach

The cells that one specific clue block can still legally occupy under the current constraints.

A cell outside the reach of every remaining block is forced empty.

Block range

The interval between the earliest and latest cells a particular block can legally occupy.

Range reasoning is a compact way to track placement possibilities without listing every complete pattern.

C

Cascade

An informal name for a chain of deductions created by constraint propagation.

One new row cell changes a column, which changes another row, and so on.

VeyraPlay uses constraint propagation as the canonical technical term and cascade as an explanatory metaphor.

Cell

One square in the Nonogram grid.

A cell can be filled, empty, or unknown while solving.

Clue

A number associated with a row or column that gives the length of one consecutive filled block.

Several clue numbers form an ordered clue sequence.

Clue order

The requirement that blocks appear in the same order as their clue numbers.

For clues 2 5 1, the 2-block must come first, then the 5-block, then the 1-block.

Clue sequence

The complete ordered list of clue numbers for one line.

Example: 4 2 2.

Completed block

A filled block whose clue identity, exact length, and boundaries are known.

Once a monochrome block is completed, cells immediately beyond its ends are empty where those cells exist and where another block must remain separate.

Constraint

A rule that limits legal cell states or block placements.

Row clues, column clues, known filled cells, known empty cells, clue order, and mandatory gaps are all constraints.

Constraint propagation

The repeated process of taking a newly forced state and using it as a new constraint in the crossing line.

Propagation continues until no immediate new deduction follows.

Contradiction

A state that cannot satisfy the puzzle constraints.

Examples include a line with no valid pattern, a block that would have to exceed its clue length, or a clue sequence that can no longer fit.

Contradiction reasoning

A technique that temporarily assumes a state, follows valid deductions, and rejects the assumption if it produces a contradiction.

Cross-reference

To transfer information from a solved or partially solved row into its crossing columns, or from a column into its crossing rows.

D

Deduction

A cell state or structural conclusion proven by the clues and current confirmed information.

A deduction is different from a guess because every valid solution consistent with the current state supports the conclusion.

Difficulty

The expected reasoning and search effort required to solve a puzzle.

Difficulty can depend on technique requirements, recognition, dependency chains, clue structure, and the rating model used by the publisher.

E

Earliest placement

The furthest-left legal placement of a block in a row, or furthest-top legal placement in a column, under the current constraints.

Also called a leftmost or topmost placement.

Edge anchoring

Single-line reasoning that uses the grid boundary as a hard limit on an identified block's placement and extension.

The phrase edge logic is also used externally, but its meaning is inconsistent: some advanced sources use edge logic or boundary logic for multi-line reasoning that tests edge placements through their consequences in crossing lines. VeyraPlay uses edge anchoring for the single-line technique and covers the broader meaning under Multi-Line Reasoning.

Empty cell

A cell proven not to be filled in the final solution.

An X is a common way to record that state.

Do not confuse empty with unknown.

Empty line

A row or column whose clue indicates that it contains no filled cells.

Every cell in the line can be marked empty immediately.

Exact fit

A situation where the minimum span of the remaining clue blocks exactly matches the available line or segment length.

The complete block-and-gap arrangement is then fixed.

F

Filled cell

A cell proven to belong to one of the clue blocks in the final solution.

External sources may call it black, painted, or occupied. VeyraPlay uses filled because the semantic state should not depend on display color.

Filled fragment

One or more adjacent confirmed filled cells whose full block identity or boundaries may not yet be known.

A fragment can later be extended or joined into a complete clue block.

Forced cell

A cell whose state is the same in every valid arrangement under consideration.

A forced cell can be forced filled or forced empty.

G

Gap

A plain-language term for space between boundaries, blocks, or filled fragments.

Because the word can be ambiguous, advanced Guides use open segment when they mean a region still available to unresolved blocks and mandatory gap when they mean required separation.

Gap elimination

Reasoning that marks an open region or part of a region empty because no remaining clue block can legally fit there.

Grid

The full rectangular playing area formed by rows and columns.

Each cell belongs to exactly one row and one column.

Griddler / Griddlers

A name used by some publications and puzzle communities for the same general picture-logic puzzle family.

VeyraPlay treats it as an alternative name, not its canonical product term.

Guess

A cell state chosen without enough information to prove it from the current constraints.

Guessing should be distinguished from provisional contradiction reasoning and systematic search.

H

Hanjie

An alternative name used for Nonogram-style picture logic puzzles.

Usage varies by region and publisher.

J

Joining

Reasoning that proves two filled fragments must belong to the same clue block and therefore connect through the cells between them.

L

Latest placement

The furthest-right legal placement of a block in a row, or furthest-bottom legal placement in a column, under the current constraints.

Also called a rightmost or bottommost placement.

Line

A row or column treated as a one-dimensional clue problem.

The word is especially useful when a technique applies identically in both orientations.

Line pattern

See Valid line pattern.

Line segmentation

The process of splitting a line into independent or semi-independent open regions using confirmed empty cells and established boundaries.

Line solving

Analyzing one row or column at a time to determine cell states forced by that line's clues and current known cells.

Different solver implementations vary in how completely they analyze the line.

M

Mandatory gap

At least one empty cell required between consecutive filled blocks in a standard monochrome Nonogram.

For clues 3 2, the 3-block and 2-block cannot touch.

Minimum span

The shortest number of cells required to fit an ordered set of blocks including mandatory gaps.

For clues 3 2 4:

  • filled cells = 3 + 2 + 4 = 9;
  • mandatory gaps = 2;
  • minimum span = 11.

Multi-line reasoning

Reasoning that combines constraints from more than one row or column when ordinary single-line deductions have reached a fixed point.

It can include shared consequences, regional counting, boundary reasoning, and other deductions that depend on several lines together.

Monochrome Nonogram

The standard one-filled-state Nonogram covered by this editorial vertical.

Color Nonograms use additional color-specific rules and belong to a separate VeyraPlay vertical.

Multiple solution

A clue set for which more than one completed grid satisfies all constraints.

N

Nonogram

A picture-logic puzzle in which ordered row and column clues describe consecutive groups of filled cells.

The solver reconstructs the hidden grid using logical constraints.

O

Open segment

A contiguous region of a line not cut by confirmed empty cells and still available to one or more unresolved clue blocks.

This is more precise than using gap for every unclosed region.

Overlap

Cells occupied by the same clue block in every relevant legal placement.

Those cells are forced filled.

Some older explanations call related reasoning Simple Boxes. VeyraPlay uses overlap.

P

Paint by Numbers

A context-dependent alternative name sometimes used for Nonogram-style puzzles.

The phrase also refers to the unrelated art activity of filling numbered regions with colors, so VeyraPlay does not use it as the primary puzzle name.

Pattern filtering

The process of removing complete line arrangements that conflict with confirmed filled/empty cells or other line constraints.

The states shared by every surviving pattern are forced.

Pic-a-Pix

Conceptis' name for its picture-logic puzzle family, including monochrome and color versions.

It is publisher-specific terminology rather than VeyraPlay's generic product name.

Picross

A widely recognized name for Nonogram-style picture logic puzzles, especially through Nintendo/Jupiter game series.

Nintendo's official legal notices state that Picross is a trademark of Nintendo, so VeyraPlay uses Nonogram as its generic public term and mentions Picross descriptively where comparison helps readers.

Picture crossword

A descriptive name sometimes used for the Nonogram puzzle family.

It refers to reconstructing a picture from row and column clues rather than solving word clues.

Placement

One legal position for a clue block or ordered set of clue blocks under the current constraints.

Placement bounds

The earliest and latest legal positions that limit where a specific clue block can appear.

Propagation

R

Reach

See Block reach.

Row

One horizontal line of the grid.

Its clue sequence appears beside the row in the standard puzzle layout.

Run

A technical synonym for block: one consecutive group of filled cells.

VeyraPlay normally introduces the synonym once and then prefers block in beginner-facing content.

S

Separator

A confirmed empty cell that keeps adjacent clue blocks distinct or closes a completed block.

Simple Boxes

A historical/community label commonly associated with overlap-style forced filled cells.

VeyraPlay uses overlap as the canonical concept.

Simple Nonogram

A term used in research for a Nonogram that can be solved by repeated single-line settling operations and alternating row/column sweeps under that formal model.

This is a technical classification, not the same thing as an app's “Easy” difficulty label.

Simple Spaces

A historical/community label associated with marking cells that no remaining block can occupy.

VeyraPlay normally describes the actual proof as block reach, unreachable cells, or gap elimination.

Slack

The amount of placement freedom left after subtracting the minimum span from the available line or segment length.

slack = available length - minimum span

Solution

A completed grid whose rows and columns all match their clue sequences.

Splitting

Reasoning that proves filled fragments cannot belong to the same clue block or that an X/boundary divides placement possibilities into separate regions.

U

Unique solution

A clue set has a unique solution when exactly one completed grid satisfies all row and column clues.

Uniqueness does not by itself guarantee that a particular human technique set can derive the solution without branching.

Unknown cell

A cell whose final state has not yet been determined.

An untouched blank-looking square in an interface is normally unknown, not confirmed empty.

V

Valid line pattern

A complete filled/empty arrangement of one row or column that satisfies its clue sequence and every currently confirmed cell state.

If every valid pattern gives a cell the same state, that cell is forced.

X

X mark

A common visual notation for a confirmed empty cell.

The semantic state is empty; the X is only its representation.

Historical technique names you may encounter

Older tutorials and puzzle communities sometimes use labels such as:

  • Simple Boxes;
  • Simple Spaces;
  • Glue;
  • Punctuating;
  • Mercury;
  • Forcing.

These names are not consistently standardized across sources. VeyraPlay prefers descriptive concepts such as overlap, completed-block separators, block reach, edge anchoring, multi-line reasoning, and contradiction reasoning, while preserving established aliases where they help readers recognize external material.

Names for the puzzle itself

You may encounter:

  • Nonogram;
  • Picross;
  • Griddlers;
  • Hanjie;
  • Pic-a-Pix;
  • picture crossword;
  • Japanese crossword;
  • Paint by Numbers.
