Learn how to approach hard Sudoku using advanced candidate patterns, Fish, Wings, links, and chains.

Advanced Sudoku becomes easier to manage when you stop asking:

Different structures suggest different technique families.

Before searching advanced patterns

Check three things first.

Candidates are accurate

A single stale or missing candidate can invalidate an advanced deduction.

Easier techniques are exhausted

Recheck Singles, Locked Candidates, and small subsets.

You know what the puzzle level supports

Do not spend time hunting Expert techniques in a puzzle generated to solve with a much smaller technique set.

Search by structure

One digit is sparse across the grid

Turn your attention to a single candidate value.

Look for:

  • X-Wing;
  • Swordfish;
  • Skyscraper;
  • Two-String Kite;
  • Simple Coloring;
  • X-Chain.

This is a digit-first search.

Several cells are bivalue

Highlight cells with exactly two candidates.

Look for:

  • XY-Wing;
  • XYZ-Wing around a related trivalue pivot;
  • W-Wing;
  • XY-Chain.

This is a cell/network-first search.

When a digit has many conjugate pairs, stop memorizing shapes and read the inference structure.

Look for:

  • Skyscraper;
  • Two-String Kite;
  • Coloring;
  • W-Wing;
  • Chains.

The same Strong/Weak Link language explains many named patterns.

Learn families in a useful order

Fish

Start with X-Wing.

Then extend the same base/cover logic to Swordfish.

The point is to understand the Fish structure, not to memorize larger names.

Wings

Start with XY-Wing:

  • pivot {X,Y};
  • pincers {X,Z} and {Y,Z}.

Then XYZ-Wing changes the pivot and therefore the visibility rule.

Learn:

  1. Strong Links;
  2. Weak Links;
  3. short named link patterns;
  4. general Chains.

That order makes W-Wing, Coloring, and X-Chains feel like deductions rather than visual tricks.

A practical advanced search cycle

When the board is genuinely stuck:

  1. Recheck candidates.
  2. Recheck Singles/intersections/subsets.
  3. Choose one digit and inspect its sparse positions.
  4. Look for Fish or short one-digit link patterns.
  5. Inspect bivalue cells for Wings.
  6. Inspect Strong-Link networks for Coloring/Chains.
  7. Make one valid elimination.
  8. Stop the advanced search.
  9. Return to Singles and simpler techniques.

The last two steps are essential.

Advanced Sudoku is still a loop, not a one-way climb toward more complicated patterns.

Recognition matters as much as proof

Many advanced techniques are easy to understand after someone highlights the right cells.

The difficult part is often discovering them unaided.

Advanced solving is not a contest to use the hardest move

If an X-Wing and a Hidden Single are both available, the Hidden Single is usually the better practical move.

Likewise, if a short Skyscraper solves the same candidate state as a long Chain, the shorter explanation is often preferable.

Use complexity when the puzzle requires it.

Common advanced mistakes

Memorizing shapes without checking the proof

Geometry helps you spot a pattern. Visibility, candidates, and link relationships prove it.

Mixing digits inside a Fish

Basic Fish follow one candidate digit.

A same-digit pair is Strong only when the unit restricts that digit to those two positions.

Eliminating from a cell that does not see the required endpoints

Wing and Chain eliminations depend on exact peer relationships.

Forgetting to re-scan

One advanced elimination can create several simple moves.
