Learn a structured strategy for solving Sudoku and find the right approach for beginner, intermediate, and advanced puzzles.

A Sudoku strategy is the way you organize your solving process. A technique is one specific deduction inside that process.

That distinction matters. Knowing 30 technique names does not help much if you search for them randomly. A strong solver uses a repeatable routine:

scan → make the simplest useful deduction → update the grid → re-scan → change search mode only when needed

The core solving strategy

1. Start with the easiest information

Look for:

  • nearly complete rows, columns, and boxes;
  • obvious missing digits;
  • Naked Singles;
  • Hidden Singles.

Do not begin by searching for an advanced pattern just because you know its name.

2. Re-scan after every placement

A new digit changes three units at once:

  • its row;
  • its column;
  • its box.

That can immediately create another Single or make a previously ambiguous digit easy to place.

3. Add candidate detail when visual solving slows down

Candidates turn “I cannot see a placement” into a more useful question:

Which possibilities can I eliminate or reserve?

This is the transition from beginner solving to intermediate solving.

4. Search by family

When candidates are accurate, choose a search mode instead of jumping between random techniques.

Intersections

  • Locked Candidates;
  • Pointing;
  • Claiming.

Subsets

  • Naked/Hidden Pairs;
  • Triples.

Single-digit patterns

  • X-Wing;
  • Swordfish;
  • Skyscraper;
  • Two-String Kite;
  • Coloring;
  • X-Chains.

Bivalue-cell patterns

  • XY-Wing;
  • XYZ-Wing;
  • W-Wing;
  • XY-Chains.

5. Return to simple logic

After any elimination, stop the advanced search and check again for:

  • Singles;
  • Locked Candidates;
  • simple subsets.

An advanced move often exists only to make an easy move possible.

The “simplest useful move” principle

The best next move is usually the simplest deduction you can verify confidently.

This is not because advanced techniques are undesirable. It is because easier deductions:

  • are faster to validate;
  • change the board with less search;
  • often reveal additional easy progress;
  • reduce the chance of overlooking a simpler path.

If a Hidden Single is available, there is little value in spending several minutes proving a Swordfish somewhere else.

Three search modes

When you feel stuck, deliberately change the question.

Unit-first

Which row, column, or box is most constrained?

Good for:

  • missing digits;
  • Singles;
  • subsets.

Digit-first

Where can this digit still go?

Good for:

  • Hidden Singles;
  • Locked Candidates;
  • Fish;
  • Coloring;
  • X-Chains.

Cell-first

What relationships exist between these candidate sets?

Good for:

  • Naked subsets;
  • Wings;
  • XY-Chains.

Changing search mode is more productive than repeatedly scanning the whole grid in the same way.

What to do when you are stuck

Use this reset sequence:

  1. Verify that candidates are current.
  2. Re-scan changed rows, columns, and boxes.
  3. Look for Singles.
  4. Scan one digit for intersections.
  5. Check small candidate sets for Pairs/Triples.
  6. If the puzzle level supports them, move into Fish, Wings, or Links.
  7. After any elimination, restart from step 2.

If you still cannot progress, a progressive hint is better for learning than an unsupported guess.

Strategy by level

Beginner

Prioritize:

  • scanning;
  • missing digits;
  • Naked Singles;
  • Hidden Singles;
  • re-scanning after every placement.

Intermediate

Prioritize:

  • trustworthy candidates;
  • Locked Candidates;
  • Pairs and Triples;
  • switching between cell-first and digit-first search.

Advanced

Prioritize:

  • candidate filters;
  • pattern families;
  • Strong/Weak Links;
  • short Chains;
  • disciplined return to simpler logic after each elimination.

Your interface changes the search, not the logic

Automatic candidates, candidate highlighting, selected-digit filters, and conflict highlighting can make some patterns easier to see.

That changes recognition difficulty, not the validity of the technique.

A Naked Single with automatic candidates may be visually obvious. The same deduction on paper can require careful peer scanning.
