How to Start a Nonogram

Learn how to choose the best first rows and columns, find early forced cells, and build momentum without guessing.

Starting a Nonogram well is mostly about choosing lines that already contain useful information. You do not need to inspect every row and column in the same order. Instead, look for clues whose possible placements are tightly constrained by the length of their line.

A strong opening usually does three things:

  1. finds one or more cells that are forced immediately;
  2. marks any empty cells that are already certain;
  3. carries those new facts into crossing rows and columns.

That gives the puzzle its first chain of deductions without any guessing.

First, look for lines that are almost full

The easiest starting points are lines where the clues consume most or all of the available cells.

Suppose a row has length 10 and clues:

4 5

Two blocks of lengths 4 and 5 require at least one empty cell between them. Their minimum span is therefore:

4 + 1 + 5 = 10

The clues exactly fill the line, so every cell is determined immediately.

Likewise, a clue of 10 in a ten-cell line fills the entire row.

These are exact-fit lines, and they are ideal opening moves because they generate a large amount of certain information at once.

Next, look for large clues with overlap

A line does not need to be an exact fit to produce forced cells.

If a single block is long relative to the line, its earliest and latest legal placements overlap. Cells inside that overlap must be filled in every valid placement.

For example, in a line of 10 cells with clue 7, the block can slide only so far. Comparing its leftmost and rightmost positions reveals several cells that are always covered.

This is often the most productive second step after exact-fit lines.

Prefer constrained lines, not simply the biggest number

A large clue is useful because it often reduces uncertainty, but the biggest number on the grid is not automatically the best line.

Compare these two ten-cell lines:

  • clue 6;
  • clues 3 3.

The 3 3 line needs at least seven cells once the mandatory gap is included. That leaves only three cells of slack. Depending on existing marks, it may be more constrained than the line containing a single 6.

A better opening question is:

How many legal arrangements can this line still have?

You do not need to enumerate them formally. At beginner level, simply look for lines where:

  • clue totals are large relative to the line;
  • several blocks leave little spare space;
  • existing filled cells restrict where a block can go;
  • X marks divide the line into small usable segments.

Use empty marks as real information

Beginners often concentrate on filling cells and postpone marking empties. That slows the puzzle down.

An empty mark can:

  • stop a completed block from growing;
  • split a long line into smaller segments;
  • remove a possible position for a clue;
  • force a block toward an edge;
  • make a crossing line suddenly solvable.

If a block is complete and its neighboring cells cannot belong to another block, mark those cells empty immediately.

After every useful move, check the crossing line

A Nonogram is not solved as a collection of independent rows.

Every marked cell belongs to one row and one column. When a row gives you a new filled or empty cell, that information changes the possibilities in the crossing column.

A productive opening therefore looks like this:

  1. solve the most constrained row you can find;
  2. inspect the columns affected by its new marks;
  3. solve any newly constrained column;
  4. inspect the rows affected by those marks;
  5. repeat.

This row-column feedback loop is the main engine of the puzzle.

A practical opening scan

When you first see a fresh grid, use this sequence.

1. Check for exact fits

Find lines where clue blocks plus their mandatory separating gaps use every cell.

2. Check for obvious overlap

Look for long blocks whose leftmost and rightmost placements overlap.

3. Check the edges

A large block close to an edge, especially when existing information restricts it, can often produce immediate cells.

4. Mark certain empties

Do not leave proven empty cells unmarked.

5. Revisit crossing lines

Every new mark may make a previously weak line useful.

The goal is not to complete one line before touching another. The goal is to keep moving toward whichever line currently contains the most information.

What not to do at the start

Avoid these common opening habits:

  • Do not guess from the picture. The emerging image is the result, not evidence.
  • Do not work strictly top to bottom. Some early lines may have almost no useful information.
  • Do not ignore columns until all rows are checked. Cross-referencing is where progress compounds.
  • Do not fill a cell just because a clue looks large. Every mark should be forced by the clue constraints.
  • Do not forget mandatory gaps. Multiple monochrome blocks need at least one empty cell between them.

When there is no obvious first move

Harder puzzles may open with no complete line and no spectacularly large clue.

In that case, compare several promising lines and ask:

  • Which line has the smallest amount of slack?
  • Which line already contains useful filled or empty cells?
  • Which clue can fit in the fewest places?
  • Which move would affect several constrained crossing lines?

You are looking for information gain, not a visually dramatic move.

If an opening pass produces nothing, the next step is usually to analyze overlap, edge restrictions, minimum spans, or existing block reach more carefully rather than to guess.

A simple opening rule to remember

When starting a Nonogram:

Find the tightest lines, mark only forced cells, then immediately use those cells in the crossing lines.

That single habit scales from small beginner puzzles to much larger grids.

FAQ

Should I always start with the largest clue?

No. Large clues are often useful, but the best line is the one with the strongest constraints. Multiple clues, mandatory gaps, existing marks, and limited segments can make a smaller-looking line more informative.

Should I solve all rows before looking at columns?

No. New row information should be propagated into columns as soon as it appears, and vice versa. Alternating between directions usually reveals deductions sooner.

What if no line can be completed immediately?

Look for partial deductions such as overlap, edge restrictions, and forced empty cells. A line does not need to be fully solved to contribute useful information.
